Since stepping into the art space, one thing has become beautifully clear: small creative groups matter. Theyāre like little pockets of care in our communityāoffering so much to the people who attend, and then rippling outward when the incredible pieces created are shared.
From start to finish, beginners to experienced makers, we come together to share, support, and connect. Some people arrive to learn new skills or deepen existing ones; others come simply to keep their hands busy while conversations gently weave their way around the table.
Recently, a few of our members have been attending Kathyās basket-making sessions. Starting with a playful bird-nest basket, participants learned how to bind grasses together while stories were shared and friendships formed. Each session gently reminds us that how you weave on the day is exactly how you turned upāheld with care, and with kind reminders to leave perfection behind.
These sessions have been held at the beautiful Low Head Community Gardenāa space with its own calm presence and steady flow.
š What kinds of creative community sessions help you feel connectedāand what would you love to see more of in your local area?
Acknowledgment: While basket weaving is deeply rooted in many cultures, including African, Native American, Australian Aboriginal and other Indigenous traditions, we wish to acknowledge that the form practised here is not representative of a specific cultural practice. Instead, it was a contemporary and respectful exploration of foundational basketry techniques, held with gratitude for the long histories of weaving that have come before.
