De Commandobunker in Kemmel werd gebouwd begin jaren 1950, in volle Koude Oorlog. België en zijn bondgenoten zagen hem als een coördinatiebunker voor de West-Europese luchtverdediging. Hij bleef echter ongebruikt, tot het Belgisch leger hem in de jaren ’60 inrichtte als hoofdkwartier in geval van oorlog, conflict of oefening. Bij een aanval van het Warschaupact zou de generale staf van het Belgisc

h leger zich hier terugtrekken om de verdediging van het land te organiseren. Daal 20 meter af in de buik van de Kemmelberg en ontdek er een wereld vol geheime missies, onzichtbare vijanden en een alomtegenwoordige spanning die niemand onberoerd laat!

Leopard 1A1

The Leopard 1 is a widely used Cold War German-made battle tank. Between 1968 and 1971, Belgium bought 334 of them as a response to Soviet T-55 and T-62 tanks.

The Leopard 1 weighs 42.5 tonnes and is armed with a 105 mm gun with an effective firing accuracy of around 2 km. It’s powered by a 10-cylinder engine producing 830 horsepower. With 985 litres of diesel, it can travel between 450 and 600 km.
Between 1994 and 1997, 132 Belgian Leopards were upgraded to the 1A5 standard, while the remaining 1A1s were taken out of service.

Here we see a Leopard 1A1 with registration number V54511 arriving at the depot in Ypres. A Bergepanzer 2000 (based on the Leopard 1 chassis) is unloading it from the tank transporter.
