Alex Pereira Teles represents the third generation of a family that shaped Brazilian popular art. Grandson of GTO and son of Mário Teles, he inherited the wood carving tradition, blending it with academic studies in Communication, Sociology, and Philosophy. His hand-carved sculptures explore spirituality, popular culture, and Brazilian ancestry, preserving GTO’s original technique with schematic figures and geometric symbols. Alex brings a softer, more anatomical style and themes like congado, folia de reis, and folk religiosity. He also directs the GTO Museum-Residence and leads art education projects that have reached around 60,000 children. Awarded the Sebrae Top 100 in Traditional Craftsmanship, his work is part of collections in over 190 countries, reaffirming wood as a living medium of Brazilian memory and cultural identity

Alex Pereira Teles vertegenwoordigt de derde generatie van een familie die de Braziliaanse volkskunst heeft gevormd. Als kleinzoon van GTO en zoon van Mário Teles erfde hij de traditie van het houtsnijwerk, die hij combineert met academische studies in Communicatie, Sociologie en Filosofie. Zijn met de hand gesneden sculpturen verkennen spiritualiteit, volkscultuur en Braziliaanse afkomst, waarbij hij de oorspronkelijke techniek van GTO behoudt met schematische figuren en geometrische symbolen. Alex brengt er een zachtere, meer anatomische stijl in, met thema’s als congado, folia de reis en volksreligiositeit. Daarnaast leidt hij het GTO Museum-Residentie en coördineert hij kunsteducatieve projecten die ongeveer 60.000 kinderen hebben bereikt. Bekroond met de Sebrae Top 100 in Traditioneel Ambacht, maken zijn werken deel uit van collecties in meer dan 190 landen, en bevestigen ze hout als een levend medium van Braziliaans geheugen en culturele identiteit.
