We recently received over 70 works by artist Dave Smith , marking a significant addition to the collection.

Born in England in 1944, Smith moved to The Bahamas in the early 1970s as an art teacher, just before independence, and spent nearly two decades living and working here during a period of rapid social and cultural change. This time had a lasting impact on his practice.

His work explores the contrast between the image of paradise and the realities of everyday life, often addressing tourism, consumer culture, and the influence of American imagery on the Bahamian landscape. Drawing from sources like film, advertising, and signage, his compositions layer different worlds and perspectives.

This body of work reflects both a deep engagement with place and an ongoing dialogue around identity, change, and representation in The Bahamas.

We are honored to welcome this generous donation into the collection.

We remember and celebrate the life and artistry of Bahamian artist Eric Ellis (1964–2026), whose vibrant work captured the rhythm, color, and spirit of our islands.

Born in Steventon, Exuma, his style became closely associated with Junkanoo and Bahamian culture, often featuring native fruits, African masks, and bold, radiant colors. As Eric once said: “I’m not painting to get rich. I’m just painting because I love it. Every Bahamian should be able to afford a work by an artist.”

We are proud to have several of his beautiful works in our collection, a few of which are currently on display:
• Slide 1 : Long Neck Lizzie (1992)
• Slide 2 : Good Ole Rake and Scrape (1995)
• Slide 3 : Jammin On Bay Street (1998)

We especially love our Gate Vinyl of a police band, which brings so much joy, color, and Bahamian spirit to our space.

Rest in peace, Eric. Your art, your passion, and the culture you celebrated will live on and continue to inspire for generations to come.

Looking back on the legacy of Roland Rose on his belated birthday 🤍

Yesterday, we celebrated Roland Rose in spirit, a visionary whose lens captured the heart and history of The Bahamas. We are deeply grateful to steward his extraordinary archive, spanning decades, islands, faces, places, and pivotal Bahamian moments.

Through hurricanes and hope, independence and everyday island life, his photographs preserve the soul of a nation. Each frame tells a story. Each image holds a memory.

Artist Biography

Roland Rose (b. 1937, Italy) is regarded as The Bahamas’ “Dean of Photography.” He moved to The Bahamas in 1946 and began his photography career with the Bahamas Development Board (later the Ministry of Tourism), where he worked for 32 years.

His images documented the nation’s journey through Independence, natural disasters, cultural life, and tourism development. Rose began exhibiting his work publicly in 1996 and received a Cacique Award for his impact on tourism. His photographs remain an enduring visual history of The Bahamas.

A graduate of Queen’s College in 1949, Vincent continued his studies in engineering in London on a Bahamas Electricity Corporation scholarship. After leaving BEC, he and his brother Adrian founded Superwash in 1968, later expanding into hospitality with the purchase of the Dolphin Hotel, milestones that solidified his status as a master of enterprise.

With the same insight he applied to business, Vincent turned his attention to culture. Though he did not grow up immersed in Bahamian art, his travels with his wife Marina sparked a deep appreciation for the visual arts. Through collecting, he discovered that art carries history, philosophy, and emotion, and that the true beauty of a work lies in the sentiment it inspires.

What began in the 1970s with a few works by Bahamian artists grew into one of the most refined and significant collections of Bahamian art in the world. By the 1990s, his collection had expanded tenfold, helping elevate Bahamian art locally and internationally.

In 1993, Vincent was invited to open the JAMMIN I exhibition, reflecting his hope to inspire emerging artists and further develop Bahamian art. His support also helped bring international attention to Bahamian artists, including Amos Ferguson.

A founding Co-Chairman of the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas, Vincent played a pivotal role in securing Villa Doyle as the home of the national collection and remains the only non-artist to receive the E. Clement Bethel Award for the Arts.

To artists, however, his greatest contribution was personal. Vincent didn’t just collect art, he believed in artists. His encouragement, thoughtful critique, and genuine appreciation gave many the confidence to push beyond their limits. He believed that the true beauty of art lies in the emotion it inspires.
