Ethnology
Exists to collect, conserve research and disseminate information on a range of heritage issues for educational purposes, leisure and sustainability from its ethno-historic permanently stored collections. It currently has over 10000 ethnographic and more than 2000 historical artefacts representing cultures from across Botswana and a few from elsewhere. Units

PRESS RELEASE - BOTSWANA HOSTS AFRICA DAY CELEBRATIONS IN GABORONE

GABORONE, 18th June 2026: The Ministry of International Relations will host the Africa Day Celebrations in collaboration with the Africa Group Missions accredited to the Republic of Botswana, on the 19th June 2026, at the National Museum and Arts Gallery in Gaborone. The event will be held under the theme, “Sixty-Three Years of Unity, Integration and Development: Let’s Celebrate Together.”

Africa Day is commemorated annually to mark the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) on 25th May 1963. The day celebrates the ideals of Pan-Africanism, the Continent’s shared heritage and solidarity among African nations.

This year’s commemorative event will among others, provide the opportunity to raise awareness about the Continent’s transformation agenda of advancing peace, stability and prosperity as envisioned in Agenda 2063. It will also provide a platform for sharing and celebrating the rich and diverse African cultures and cuisine.

Today Department of National Museum and Monuments commemorates International Museum day with Radio Botswana by profiling,celebrating and bringing to the fore,the importance such an Institution's existence has in safeguarding national heritage and tackling and highlighting issues brought up by the theme.

This year's theme highlights the transformative role of museums in bridging cultural, social, and geopolitical divides. It emphasizes how cultural institutions act as trusted public spaces where diverse communities can foster dialogue, understanding, and peace.The theme was established by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) and also coincides with the organization's 80th-anniversary celebrations.𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲:
