"[The topic of variation] emerges from a rich tradition across art forms: In music, Rachmaninoff composed โVariations on a Theme of Paganiniโ and Bach his โGoldberg Variations.โ In visual arts, Monet painted the Rouen Cathedral over thirty times, and his haystacks twenty-five times, portraying the same subject from different perspectives, in different lights and weathers.
Photography naturally lends itself to such variations, if simply because of the speed and ease of shifting the cameraโs frame or exposure. Walker Evans, Imogen Cunningham, Michael Kenna and countless other photographers have experimented with making multiple images of the same subjects by varying their cameraโs lens, focal length, exposures, and so on.
The spirit behind this tradition [...] echoes through the photographic journeys of the following six artists, who share their work [in this article] and reflect on how variations relate to their creative process."
