A big shout-out to Mike Bellis for sharing some of his incredible art pieces at the gallery. It’s always a joy to chat with Mike about art and hear about the inspiring things he’s doing in the community.

Mike Bellis is a Haida artist born in Victoria, BC in 1973. He is inspired by Haida mythology and culture and interprets that through his own interactions with the natural world. Working mostly with red and yellow cedar, Bellis enjoys combining
the time-honored beauty of traditional Haida art with contemporary shapes, colors, and design.
Bellis hails from a family with multiple generations of Haida artists. His father John Bellis has been instrumental in passing on knowledge of traditional Haida design. Master carver Bill Bellis is his cousin, and captain Andrew Brown is his great grandfather.
Bellis is a citizen of the Haida Nation of Old Massett and was born into the Eagle Clan.

A huge shout-out to Jason and Vera Harris for bringing us three magnificent large yellow cedar hummingbirds, beautifully accented with abalone—truly a sight to behold!
Jason Harris, a talented Stz'uminus carver, developed his love for traditional carving from his late father. “I grew up in Stz’uminus and became interested in carving through my late father,” his artist bio on the town website shares. “He carved all his life, and in 2003 we took a carving course together in Cowichan with the late master carver Simon Charlie. Over the years, my interest in carving grew, though I never imagined making a living from my art. I worked on carvings off and on, but as more people began ordering my work, it became my passion. I’ve created many types of traditional art used by our people and am new exploring designs” Jason is especially known for his large yellow cedar hummingbird plaque at the Nanaimo Airport, among many other creative works and designs.
