Save the date: Opening September 17

Kelly Andres: Gleaning the Blue-Green
September 18 - December 5, 2026

Opening Reception: Thursday, September 17, 6 - 8 pm.

In Gleaning the Blue-Green, Kelly Andres experiments with the ways we seek understanding about the living systems of plants and animals around us. Drawing from her own efforts to learn about an important ecosystem close to her rural home east of Edmonton – the wetland – the artist’s creative fodder is the methods often used in scientific study. Andres has created this series of sculpture, video, photography, and performance from gathering and growing water lentils and spirulina, collecting water samples, and building datasets. Rather than generating data intended for analysis and supporting empirical knowledge, Andres instead uses these artistic interpretations of scientific methods to ask important questions about how and what is knowable – what it is that we can glean – about living systems. The ongoing maintenance of the plants in the gallery is a performance of care between the artist and her living subjects. Andres’s investment in relational care opens space for us to consider what might be required of such relationships as our climate continues shifting.

Gallery Hours:
Tuesday to Saturday: 12 - 5 p.m.
Thursdays: 12 - 7 p.m.

We acknowledge the support of the Province of Alberta through Alberta Foundation for the Arts.

Final week of Summer Art Buffet!

Visit us this Wednesday, July 29 from 12 - 4 pm in Allard Hall, for the last session of Art Buffet until we reopen in September! Join us for an afternoon of low pressure art-making where we provide the materials and a welcoming and encouraging space to create. Come hang out with your work pals over your lunch break, or plan to bring friends and family!

What is Art Buffet?

The Art Buffet is the Mitchell Art Gallery’s own “art hive”, a concept developed over two decades of research by Dr. Janis Timm-Bottos rooted in ideas of art therapy and inclusivity. Every Wednesday, we gather and invite the community to join us in self-directed, no-pressure art-making, where we provide the materials and the encouragement! This summer, you can contribute to a large-scale community weaving project during Art Buffet as well. We hope to see you there!

Reminder: After our last summer session on July 29th, Art Buffet will be taking a short break and returning in September for the new semester.
