In Waiting for Low Tide, Don Vaughan turns a simple act of nature into a meditation on time and renewal.

A ring of granite boulders encircles a tidal pool that fills and empties with the sea. When the ocean retreats, the circle reveals its textures—sand, stone, and sea life catching the last light before the water returns. Like its companion work, Marking High Tide, it invites stillness and awareness of forces larger than the city itself. 📸 by .photography

You may have encountered this elegant structure along the seawall at David Lam Park and wondered—what’s its story? It carries an almost ceremonial presence, and you wouldn’t be wrong. Marking High Tide transforms the tide’s motion into ritual—a concrete ring that rises above False Creek, joined and separated from the sea with every lunar pull. Created by artist Don Vaughan, Marking High Tide gives sculptural form to the slow conversation between the ocean and the moon — a concrete ring rising above False Creek, filling and emptying as the tides pass through. Along the inside of the ring, Vaughan’s own words trace the work’s intent: “As the moon circles the earth the ocean responds with the rhythm of the tides.”

Vaughan designed the work not as a monument, but as moment; a place to sense the rhythms that connect earth, water, and sky. When the tide rises, the structure unites with the ocean; when it falls, it stands apart—a reminder of the distances and returns that shape all living cycles. 📸 by .photography
