The smooth Silk Road brought fine steeds from the Western Regions to the Central Plains. Tri-color glazed pottery horses of the Tang Dynasty are vivid and spirited, embodying both practical combat prowess and aesthetic grace. The Six Steeds of Zhao Mausoleum, which accompanied Emperor Taizong in unifying the four directions, transcended mortal horses to become symbols of loyalty, courage and the divine mandate, inscribing the bold and uplifting spirit of the Tang Dynasty in metal and stone.

Tianma Yingrui – The Images and Connotations of Heavenly Horses in Ancient China Special Exhibition invites you to admire the shadows of steed spanning a millennium! Emperor Wu of the Han sent envoys thousands of miles to obtain the blood-sweating thoroughbreds, composed The Ode to Heavenly Horses and designated heavenly horses as auspicious omens of divine mandate. He even had horse-hoof-shaped gold ingots cast and horse administration established, integrating heavenly horses into the orthodox national narrative.
At Nanjing Museum’s special exhibition, the Eastern Han terracotta horses and bronze horse-drawn carriages, with their sturdy and vigorous frames, embody the great ambitions and beliefs of the Han Dynasty. Come and touch this legend from the Western Regions!
