Dee Dee Ramone, 1978.

Here‘s Dee Dee talking to the press after a Ramones show at the Old Waldorf in San Francisco, January 30, 1978.

Dee Dee is wearing a shirt from „Chatterbox“, a fanzine from Seattle, founded by Lee Lumsden. „Chatterbox“ included original poetry, artwork and a wide variety of music: Lou Reed, Bowie, Slade and bands from the local Punk scene.

The first issue was published in early 1976. Editorial staff included Tomata Du Plenty of The Tupperwares, future singer of The Screamers.

In 1977, Lumsden put on the first Ramones live appearance in Seattle at the Olympic Hotel. His band The Meyce opened the show.

Johnny Ramone & John Lydon, 1981.

Here‘s Johnny Ramone and PIL frontman John Lydon, also known as Johnny Rotten, former singer of the S*x Pistols.

The two had met various times before. First when the Ramones played in London in July 1976, and then again at the Roundhouse in June 1977 - aka the infamous „Piss“ incident, when the Ramones handed Rotten a cup of b**r with a shot of urine.

Seeing the two here in 1981 is a surprise, as Johnny Ramone hardly left the house when he was off tour, let alone to watch the performance of a former S*x Pistol.

Then again, he got to witness PIL‘s legendary „Riot At The Ritz“ show: PIL fans had waited hours in the rain, grew angry at the lack of a traditional live experience, as the band performed behind a giant video screen, and started throwing bottles after Lydon had taunted them: „Sil-ly f**k-ing aud-ience, sil-ly f**k-ing aud-ience“.

The show was ended by staff members of The Ritz. The second night of the residency was cancelled.

Johnny & Joey Ramone, 1979.

Here‘s another good one from Johnny and Joey on stage at the „New World Music Festival“ in Toronto, July 2, 1979.

This was one of the most memorable Ramones gigs, as the band got pelted with coins and cans while playing their set, sandwiched between Canadian acts Moxy, Johnny Winter. Nazareth, Ted Nugent & Aerosmith.

In his memoir „Commando“, Johnny remembers:
„About five or six songs into the set, the whole crowd stood up, and I thought it had started to rain. Dee Dee thought the same thing, but they were throwing stuff at us (…) Then, all of a sudden, I broke two strings on my guitar in one strum. I thought it was a sign from God to get off the stage. So I just walked to the front of the stage, stopped playing, and gave the audience the finger - with both hands (…) I wasn’t gonna stand there and be booed and have stuff thrown at us without retaliating in some way.“

Later that evening, the fans would storm the stage at Chateau Neuf, forcing the band to stop the show. When this photo was taken in the afternoon, they were still smiling, not yet knowing what was ahead of them.

Johnny Ramone, 1992.

Here‘s Johnny with his trademark photo face, captured by Danny Clinch in 1992.

In Monte A. Melnick‘s great book „On The Road With The Ramones“, Tommy Ramone - amongst others - shares his memories about his Highschool pal from Forest Hills, and what it was like to be around him.

„Once I was taking to Johnny in the dressing room and looked into his eyes. His pupils were the tiniest I’ve ever seen in my life, which signals aggression. I don’t think he was angry with me, but that’s what he carried around (…) He can be very likeable. When a person first meets him and he’s in a good mood, he’ll charm. the pants off ya, genuinely. He has that. It’s part of him. Hes a nice guy. Johnny is very funny when he wants to be. He is very witty, highly intelligent, very quick and can be fun to be with. You can’t forget him. But if he turns on you, watch out.“
