A METABOLIC SWITCH IN THE ARTS

Saturday 14.10.23, 4 - 6 pm

with .breidenbach (artist) Kim Kraczon (conservator of contemporary art, director of materials at KiCulture, advisor for GCC and founding member of GCC Berlin) and Felix Große-Lohmann (/ )

In the exhibition METABOLE by X Breidenbach feat. Christian Doeller (Sound) sustainability is elementally connected with the arts. Material choices, production methods, transport and storage as well as the decay of art are actively considered and become artistic and contextual elements in the show.

Philosopher Timothy Morton describes anthropocene systems such as microplastics and climate catastrophe as hyperobjects. These objects are too vast and complex to simply break down or localize and exist in dimensions and scales that are incomparable to human life. Therefore, hyperobjects such as climate catastrophe/ mass extinction must be explored artistically to further develop and sensitize our perception and worldview.

The resulting questions for the meaning and role of artistic-material aesthetics and practices in the art-worlds shortly before a climatic "point of no return" will receive special attention in this panel and create discussion opportunities with the audience.

Very happy to be working with the amazing collective and production team of and for

"Die Werkstatt" is a variable, walk-through and performative installation. Using found and recycled materials, the space was constructed by the Tunisian artists' collective El Warcha together with young people. As part of the Incubation Pod, the space functions as an imaginative play-ground, a meeting point, and as a place to relax. A flexible recreation area that invites all visitors to spend time and redesign the museum space in a playful way, so as to collectively create an environment that will evolve and grow as visitors come by. In the evenings, the playground is transformed into a dreamscape where people can linger and where a variety of events will be hosted.
The Tunisian collective El Warcha advocates the joy of experimentation as a catalyst for reflection and the exchange of knowledge. Their participatory educational ideas reconceive living spaces, with a strong commitment to material cycles, creative repurposing and sustainablity. The projects they have initiated via this process include floating concerts, short science-fiction films, and a public boxing ring. El Warcha promotes civic engagement, collaboration, and education outside traditional institutions. El Warcha was established in Tunis in 2016 and is active internationally with workshops in Lisbon and London as well as regular activities in the Tunisian desert town of Nefta. In 2022 El Warcha was invited to documenta fifteen.
For the procurement of materials and the implementation of the design of the space, El Warcha worked closely with "MFA - Material für Alle", an organization for sustainable material cycles from Frankfurt, which collects and stores materials that have become superfluous in the cultural sector to make them accessible for creative reuse.

Don’t miss the opening party tonight .offenbach and the official opening tomorrow with a conversation with the collective in the museum at 9 pm. And the auction of the works at the end of the festival on 16th of July!

The network IFM - Initiatives for Material Cycles released a dog for adoption! The Moondog from the performative concert of the same name spent two years on stages and four years in temporary storages of Materialverwaltung on Tour in the Ruhr area. Moondog "Krümel" luckily found a new home until 22.7.22. (More soon!)

From July 22 - 24, 2022, the third network meeting of the IFM took place at documenta fifteen to prepare an association for the initiatives for material cycles. The 21 initiatives in the German-speaking area face the question: where do materials come from and where do they go? The material initiatives can be understood as a lumbung - common rice storage - in the sense of the curatorial concept of . In close cooperation between the material initiatives the production team and ruangrupa, materials from documenta fifteen will be inventoried over the course of the 100 days and redistributed after. By connecting material and public, a metabolism is revived.

The IFM develops material redistribution concepts that make
borrowing, giving, appropriating, inheriting, assimilating, being affected, inspired, dependent, hunted, possessed, quoting, rewriting, reworking, transforming, revision, re-evaluation, variation, version, interpretation, imitation, approaching, improvisation, supplement, addition, prequel, pastiche, paraphrase, parody, piracy, forgery, homage, mimicry, travesty, shan-zhai, echo, allusion, intertextuality and karaoke, as well as categories of the art world such as authorship, originality, creativity, intellectual property, signature, market value, museum space, white cube, history, gender, subject, identity, and paradoxes visible and aesthetically tangible through reuse.

Thrilled that MFA is part of doing with an amazing Team from .lager.muc &

After becoming a member of the IFM - Initiativen für Materialkreisläufe last July, Documenta invited the network to present their work, host a meeting to form a union, organize public discussions and material flows from and for the divers artistic projects in Kassel! I deeply appreciate RUANGRUPA‘s approach and am looking forward to learn together:

„In line with ruangrupa’s artistic concept and lumbung practice, the theme of sustainability is approached holistically at documenta fifteen and reflected throughout all aspects of exhibition planning and implementation. In addition to addressing ecological factors, the focus is on cultural, social, political and economic aspects. For ruangrupa, togetherness and sharing, as well as the exchange of knowledge, are particularly essential for sustainable development.

Sustainability at documenta fifteen is thus both a theme of artistic practice and an important feature of infrastructure planning. documenta und Museum Fridericianum gGmbH is guided here by the University of Kassel in the development of a more sustainable exhibition, with all relevant fields from mobility to gastronomy being addressed.

The stakeholders and partners collaborating with documenta fifteen are called upon to incorporate sustainability strategies and ecological footprint reduction into their decisions and to make responsible choices as a result. The goal is also to ensure the topic of sustainability is similarly brought to the attention of documenta fifteen visitors.“

Material for the Arts
