Helgoland Island 1945 - 2026

Hamburg and Heligoland Trip

Flew into Hamburg and saw some sights for a day before taking a ferry 50miles into the North Sea to the small islands of Heligoland and Dune.

A place with a lot of history including being used as a base by the Germans in both the First and Second World Wars.

It was heavily bombed in 1945 including having Grandslam and Tallboy bombs dropped by 617 Squadron. After the war the population was evacuated and at one time 6700tons of surplus explosives was detonated in one of the largest non-nuclear explosions in history.

A really interesting place with great views.

After two days on Heligoland took the ferry back to Hamburg and spent two nights in the hotel built on top of a converted Flak Tower bunker. A few other sites visited including another flak tower before heading back home.

Former RAF Ringway, now Manchester Airport.

Among other uses it was home to No1 Parachute Training School where many paratroopers learnt to jump as well as members of the SOE for operations such as Anthropoid.

Some then and now images for the 82nd anniversary of the battle for Geel.

The Sherwood Rangers lost 11 tanks with 2 more damaged. They suffered 24 killed plus 22 wounded.
