Future songs of fish and people

Amanda Piñas Werk entstand im Auftrag einer Gruppe von Bürger*innen – den Neuen Auftraggeber von Ummanz und in Zusammenarbeit mit Michel Jimenez, Sinon Quilla und Federico Protto. Gemeinsam mit lokalen und internationalen Akteur*innen, darunter TogetherTogether Collective, Ron Alonso Berger, Jee Chan, Angela Muñoz Martinez, Mitgliedern von Perform[D]ance Stralsund und der Samtenser Frauenchor, wird es am 27. Juni 2026 erstmals aufgeführt. „Future songs of fish and people“ ist der erste Teil des mehrgliedrigen Projekts „Atlantic Undercurrent Circulation“ von Amanda Piña. 

Initiiert und uraufgeführt in ”Tanz und Performance im Bürgerauftrag”, einem Programm der Gesellschaft der Neuen Auftraggeber. Gefördert durch die Kulturstiftung des Bundes. Gefördert von dem Beauftragten der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien.

Amanda Piña’s work was commissioned by a group of local residents – the New Patrons of Ummanz – and created in collaboration with Michel Jimenez, Sinon Quilla and Federico Protto. Together with local and international participants, including TogetherTogether Collective, Ron Alonso Berger, Jee Chan, Angela Muñoz Martinez, members of Perform[D]ance Stralsund and the Samtens Women’s Choir, it will be performed for the first time on 27 June 2026. “Future songs of fish and people” is the first part of the multi-part project “Atlantic Undercurrent Circulation” by Amanda Piña.

Initiated and premiered within “Citizen-Commissioned Dance and Performance”, a programme of Gesellschaft der Neuen Auftraggeber. Funded by Kulturstiftung des Bundes (German Federal Cultural Foundation). Funded by the Beauftragter der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien (Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media).

Die Neuen Auftraggeber von Ummanz wollen die Küstenfischerei in den Blick rücken – mit einer künstlerischen Produktion, die ihre Geschichte, ihr Wissen und ihren Wandel erfahrbar macht.
 
Die Insel Ummanz westlich von Rügen war über Jahrhunderte ein Zentrum der lokalen Küstenfischerei. Doch die steht nun vor dem Verschwinden – wie an vielen anderen Orten in Europa.
 
Die Küstenfischer eint ein tiefes Verständnis für ökologische Zusammenhänge und die Zyklen der Natur, handwerkliches Geschick und unternehmerisches Gespür. Mit dem Rückgang der Fischerei droht ihr über Generationen weitergegebenes Wissen zu verschwinden. Mit einem Kunstwerk sollen die Küstenfischer und ihre Familien für ihre Leistungen gewürdigt und ihre Bedeutung für alle erlebbar gemacht werden.

English Version
The Neue Auftraggeber von Ummanz aim to bring coastal fishing into the spotlight—through an artistic project that brings its history, knowledge, and transformation to life.
 
For centuries, the island of Ummanz, west of Rügen, was a hub of local coastal fishing. But that industry is now on the verge of disappearing—as is the case in many other places in Europe.
 
Coastal fishermen are united by a deep understanding of ecological relationships and the cycles of nature, as well as by their craftsmanship and entrepreneurial spirit. With the decline of the fishing industry, the knowledge they have passed down through generations is in danger of being lost. A work of art is intended to honor the coastal fishermen and their families for their contributions and to help everyone appreciate their importance.

Performance am 27.06.2026 – Future Songs of Fish and People
Amanda Piña würdigt mit ihrer Performance das Wissen und die Arbeit der Boddenfischer und knüpft neue Beziehungen zum Meer und seinen Lebewesen. Denn die Küstenfischerei ist mehr als nur ein Wirtschaftszweig – sie ist altes Wissen und gelebte Praxis und wurde in diesem Jahr zum immateriellen Weltkulturerbe der UNESCO erklärt. 

Amanda Piñas Werk entstand im Auftrag einer Gruppe von Bürger*innen – den Neuen Auftraggeber von Ummanz und in Zusammenarbeit mit Michel Jimenez, Sinon Quilla und Federico Protto. Gemeinsam mit TogetherTogether Collective, Ron Alonso Berger, Jee Chan, Angela Muñoz Martinez, Mitgliedern von Perform[D]ance Stralsund, dem Samtenser Frauenchor und weiteren lokalen Akteur*innen wird es am 27. Juni 2026 erstmals aufgeführt.

English Version
Through her performance, Amanda Piña pays tribute to the knowledge and work of the Bodden fishermen and forges new connections with the sea and its creatures. For coastal fishing is more than just an industry – it is ancient knowledge and living practice, and was declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO this year. 

Amanda Piña’s work was commissioned by a group of citizens – the New Patrons of Ummanz – and created in collaboration with Michel Jimenez, Sinon Quilla and Federico Protto. Together with TogetherTogether Collective, Ron Alonso Berger, Jee Chan, Angela Muñoz Martinez, members of Perform[D]ance Stralsund, Samtens Women Choir and other local stakeholders, it will be performed for the first time on 27 June 2026. 

Everyone is welcome, and admission is free!

The Apple Ornament
For Antje Majewski, the apple is both an art object and a way to address the threat to biodiversity. Together with the New Patrons of Wietstock, she has designed an apple ornament that will be incorporated into the paths of the planned community garden.

First meeting with the artist

The Wietstock Working Group invited Antje Majweski, an artist living in Berlin and Himmelpfort/Brandenburg, to fulfil its commission. She comes from a background in painting and thinks in images but has also frequently designed community processes in her work and integrated nature into them.
 
Antje Majewski’s (born 1968, Marl, Germany) paintings, video works, and installations address how humans interact with cultural objects, plants, and ecosystems. With a particular interest in cultural and geobotanical migration, she explores oral history and transformation processes as well as questions of ownership and self-efficacy. An important part of Majewski’s work is her collaboration with other artists, ecological and civic groups, and scientists.

Constanze Gatz, Anja Ludolph, Dörte Kummert-Lübken, Tina Netzband, Katrin Peter, Sieglinde Priem, Franziska Reek-Siewert, Birgit Prasdorf, Bernd Rohleder and Heidrun Wurm have formulated their commmission for art. How can a garden help to reopen the conversation? What should a community garden look like that serves primarily as a place of exchange rather than representation? How can it utilise local knowledge, reflect the newly discovered love of w**ds and immigrant plants, and at the same time deal with the scarcity of the natural resource water? The community garden should be a portrait of the villagers, but it should also incorporate their experiences with climate change and local knowledge about how to deal with it. Their own gardens, as places of knowledge production and resistance to the consequences of industrial agriculture and climate change, are the starting point for this.
 
„We want to commission an art project that will transform the village garden into a place of diversity and knowledge exchange. It should provide opportunities for experiences that will become part of our emotional memory. […] The art project could demonstrate how plants, but also people from different backgrounds and with different lifestyles, can coexist even under difficult conditions. In particular, we want to highlight the lack of the natural resource water.“

Workshop: „Living with plants“ with artist Lisa Marie Steude

The aim of the workshop was to learn from the group what value a garden with its various components can have beyond its usefulness to humans. Inspired by exercises that encouraged an aesthetic engagement with the garden and appealed to different senses, the participants discussed an emotional relationship with their own gardens, which may complement a practical relationship. One conclusion reached by the participants was that art and their own gardens had become more ‘accessible’ to them through their own creative activity.
 
One participant reported a sudden change in her perception of an unwelcome w**d. While pulling out the rapidly spreading plant, she heard the buzzing of bees and noticed that many insects feed on the plant. So the plant was allowed to stay in the garden. Others brought objects and plants that they cherish – such as a watering can that has become an object of devoted care, or Mediterranean herbs that have been growing luxuriantly for several years. The participants exchanged views on their personal relationship with their own gardens and realised that their daily work generates knowledge that is also interesting for others.

Vielen Dank Concomitentes für wunderbare Tage in Galizien zur Konferenz Repairing the Earth!

Danke für die Gelegenheit, die Fragen der Auftraggeber*innen vom Wietstocker Dorfgarten in La Térmica Cultura ( ) in Ponferrada vorstellen zu können. Danke für die großartigen Impulsvorträge von Mario Pansera ( ) und Belén Sola ( ).

Es war wunderbar, die Mediator*innen Sonja Leboš (sonjalebos13 )und Alfredo Escapa ( ) persönlich kennenzulernen – und die Auftraggeber*innen von Barruelo de Santullán.

Ein großer Dank an Fran Quiroga ( ) von Concomitentes für das Engagement und die Einladung.

Massive thanks to Concomitentes ( ) for fantastic days in Galicia at the "Repairing the Earth" conference!

It was brilliant to have the chance to present the questions from the new patrons citizen group of Wietstock Village Garden at La Térmica Cultura () in Ponferrada. And huge props for the amazing keynotes from Mario Pansera () and Belén Sola ().

It was also wonderful to finally meet mediators Sonja Leboš (sonjalebos13) and Alfredo Escapa () in person and, of course, the concomitentes of Barruelo de Santullán themselves.

Goodbye Putbus!

Nach zehn wunderbaren Jahren schließen wir unsere Galerie in Putbus, um uns künftig verstärkt freien Projekten zu widmen. Wir danken allen herzlich für die langjährige Unterstützung, für inspirierende Begegnungen und gemeinsames Erleben der Kunst.
Wir freuen uns darauf, Ihnen und Euch bald in neuen Kontexten zu begegnen!

Wir blicken zurück auf mehr als 60 Ausstellungen und Projekte. Einzelausstellungen, thematische Gruppenausstellungen, Baltic Video Lounge, Circus Circus, Leere Fülle auf dem Circus, Parties und Konzerte im Keller. Ich bedanke mich bei allen Künstlerinnen und Künstlern für ihren Enthusiasmus, mit großartigen Ausstellungen die Räume im Circus Eins immer wieder zu verwandeln.

Vielen Dank an unsere Kooperationspartner: die DKB Stiftung für gesellschaftliches Engagement, die Hochschule Wismar, das Caspar-David-Friedrich-Institut der Universität Greifswald, Olaf Fippinger, Daniela Risch, Sarah Linke, Mikiko Sato, Hubert Schwarz und Rudi Molacek sowie Jürgen Breuer, der uns großzügig das Haus am Circus 11 überlassen hat. Als die Neuen Wilden über die USA den westdeutschen Kunstmarkt eroberten, kannte im Westen kaum jemand den Maler Oskar Manigk – und dennoch entwickelte er eine ähnliche Formensprache. Im Bestreben die Malerei von ihren Ansprüchen zu befreien wählte er Sujets die als nicht kunstwürdig galten, mischte die Medien und wechselte generös die Genres.

Humorvoll subversiv, doch getragen von nachdenklicher Melancholie sind viele seiner Bilder. Er hinterfragt die Kunst und die Rolle des Künstlers mit kraftvollen Bildern, die aktuelle Themen zum Anlass nehmen, um der Wirklichkeit und dem Leben eine Bühne zu bieten.

Die Ausstellung ist noch bis zum 26. Januar jeweils Freitag, Sonnabend und Sonntag von 13 bis 17 Uhr zu sehen. Zeitgleich zeigen wir Klanginstallationen von Lisa Steude zum Thema Mensch und
