Interview | Mariana Jiménez Zúñiga
Art Studio Papagayo Park

We chatted with artist and educator Mariana Jiménez Zúñiga to learn about Art Studio Papagayo’s workshop programme at Papagayo Park on the peninsula—where ceramics, printmaking and painting classes offer residents a hands-on way to engage with Costa Rica’s indigenous artistic traditions.

Working alongside Brandon Romero Castillo from Guaitil, Mariana has helped build a programme that weaves together Pre-Columbian techniques, contemporary practice and the peninsula’s natural environment. From functional ceramics to ocean-inspired forms, workshops with guest artisans and open studio sessions— it’s about responding to tradition and place.

Our conversation with Mariana touches on teaching ancient techniques to beginners, why the peninsula’s landscape matters and how ceramics connects us across thousands of years.

Studio Visit : Gema Ossenbach

Last month we visited ceramicist Gema Ossenbach in her Tres Ríos studio near Cartago. Spanish-born, Costa Rica-based for forty years, Gema makes contemporary work within one of the longest ceramic traditions in the Americas. Costa Rica has been a centre of ceramic practice for close to four thousand years.

The studio is extraordinary. Gema walked us through her processes from start to finish. Full studio visit on the blog — link in bio 👆🏻

Jaime Gurdián | From the Shore

Opening reception
Friday 20 March, 6–9pm
Zarpe, Playas del Coco

Live music by Marjo and special cocktails by Zarpe 🍸

Exhibition continues through 13 April.

MÍRAME Fine Art presents a selection of new paintings by Jaime Gurdián, inspired by the textures of the Guanacaste coast.

Having been fascinated with the region’s shores since childhood, Gurdián has developed a practice of mixing sand directly into the paint, building textured surfaces that evoke the grain and weight of the coastal landscapes.

From the Shore also marks the debut of his new technique of incorporating crushed natural river stone into the canvas — sourced from the rivers and terrain that ultimately meet the ocean.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Catalogue available upon request.

Christian Porras , Playas del Coco

A presentation of new paintings by Liberia- based artist and musician Christian Porras at Zarpe transformed Zarpe Lounge into an intimate exhibition space.

The evening brought together members of the Coco community for a gathering centred on the artistic and cultural rhythms of Guanacaste, accompanied by a live performance by the artist and series of cocktails inspired by Christian’s practice.

With thanks to and our collaborators at Zarpe, and to all who joined us ☀️

MÍRAME presents “Soundscapes in Color”, a weekend exhibition celebrating the painting of Liberia-based artist Christian Porras (20–22 February 2026).

Christian translates the sounds and rhythms of his home region, Guanacaste, into landscape paintings where curved lines, oval shapes and color become melodies.

Zarpe’s intimate cocktail lounge will be transformed into a temporary gallery showcasing an exclusive selection of recent paintings, including three created for this event.

On Saturday 21 February (6–7pm), Christian will perform live at Zarpe—a rare opportunity to experience music and the paintings it inspires. Zarpe’s mixologists have created four special cocktails inspired by the artworks to complete the immersive experience.

“Soundscapes in Color” marks MÍRAME’s first collaboration with Zarpe, furthering our commitment to supporting Costa Rica’s contemporary artists.

Artworks available. Catalogue upon request—DM for details or email Belinda Seppings : [email protected]

EROS Y TÁNATOS at the Museo Histórico Cultural Juan Santamaría, Alajuela

Last days to see the exhibition of new figurative paintings by Costa Rican artists Pablo Mejías and Gregory Fage. The work on display explores psychological tension through classical mythology.

Eros represents desire and vitality.
Thanatos embodies serene death.

Mejías brings emotionally charged canvases featuring hybrid beings and suspended figures, creating new worlds often with dramatic chiaroscuro.

Fage contributes paintings informed by Joseph Campbell’s hero’s journey, using his Casa Fage lineage and classical sensibility.

Eros y Tánatos celebrates the progression of these artist’s careers and contributes to growing conversations around figuration in Latin America, balancing beauty and unease through personal yet archetypal imagery.

Exhibition closes 28 January, 2026.

STUDIO VISIT | ADRIÁN ARGUEDAS

We went to visit Adrián in his Heredia studio last week. The new prints—including striking large format pieces—new paintings, masks in progress and his vision for the next phase of his work gave us a glimpse into why he’s one of Costa Rica’s most celebrated contemporary artists.
