📖 When we talk about the liberation of Grandcamp, we necessarily mention the heroic action of Franck PEREGOY but we then omit a good number of actions that took place on that day. Let me tell you about John TAYLOR.
👤 Born on August 14, 1918, John "Johnnie" W. TAYLOR is originally from Virginia, USA, where he lives with his wife Louise. He is then engaged in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), a program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Administration, for which Johnnie performs reforestation and maintenance work.
On January 21st, 1941, one year before the United States entered war, Johnnie joins his state's National Guard. Then, he served in K Company, 116th Infantry Regiment, in the same platoon Frank PEREGOY served in. With his unit, Johnny travelled to England to prepare for the terrible Battle of Normandy, and especially for the landing on Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944.
🎖 On June 8th, as they march towards Grandcamp, Johnnie and his company find themselves nailed to the ground along the road to Vierville by the German machine guns of the Wn 78. As the rest of the soldiers take shelter from German gunfire, Johnnie, armed with a bazooka, crawls along the road, under enemy fire, accompanied by a comrade. When he reaches up the road, he spots a machine gun nest and targets it. The shot is accurate and the explosion destroys the German position. This action lessens the pressure on American troops and allows them to move a little further toward liberating Grandcamp. For his action, Private First Class John W. Taylor received the Silver Star. A hero to his comrades but also to the inhabitants of Grandcamp!
🧑 Johnnie ends the war with the rank of Staff Sergeant and returns to the United States in May 1945 to his wife Louise and son John. He becomes a Mechanic at MacGregor Motor Company. Johnny and Louise later welcomed their second child, Jerry, and soon build a beautiful family of 4 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. After a good life with his family, Johnnie passed away in May 2001.
Today, his grandson Brian Taylor lives on. We exchanged as part of my research on the Heroes of Grandcamp and it is my great pleasure to be able to shine a light today in front of those he helped to recover freedom.

📖 Lorsqu'on parle de la libération de Grandcamp, on évoque forcément l'action héroique de Franck PEREGOY mais on omet alors un bon nombre de coups d'éclats qui eurent lieu ce jour là. Parmi ces derniers, celui de John TAYLOR.
👤 Né le 14 aout 1918, John "Johnnie" W. TAYLOR est originaire de l'état de Virginie, USA, où il vit avec sa femme Louise. Il est alors engagé dans le Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), programme de l'administration américaine de protection de l'environnement pour lequel Johnnie exécute des travaux de reboisement et d'entretiens.
🪖 Le 21 Janvier 1941, bien avant l'entrée en guerre des Etats Unis, Johnnie s'engage dans la Garde Nationale de son état. Il rejoint donc la K Company du 116th Infantry Regiment, dans le même peloton que Frank PEREGOY. Avec cette unité, Johnny partira en Angleterre pour se préparer à la terrible bataille de Normandie, et surtout au débarquement du 6 juin 1944 sur Omaha Beach.
🎖 Le 8 juin, alors qu'ils marchent vers Grandcamp, Johnnie et sa compagnie se trouvent cloués au sol le long de la route de Vierville par les mitrailleuses allemandes du Wn 78. Alors que les soldats se mettent à l'abri des tirs allemands, Johnnie, armé d'un bazooka rampe le long de la route, sous le feu ennemi. Lorsqu'il arrive un peu en haut de la route, il repère un nid de mitrailleuse et le vise. Le tir est précis et l'explosion détruit la position allemande. Cette action diminue la pression subie par les troupes américaines et permet de les laisser avancer un peu plus vers la libération de Grandcamp. Pour cette action, le Private First Class John W. TAYLOR se vera décerner la Silver Star. Un héros pour ses camarades mais aussi pour les habitants de Grandcamp!
🧑🧑🧒🧒 Johnnie finit la guerre avec le rang de Staff Sergeant et revient en Mai 1945 auprès de sa femme Louise et de son fils John aux Etats-Unis. Il devient alors Mécanicien chez MacGregor Motor Company. Plus t**d, Johnny et Louise accueillent leur second enfant, Jerry. En découle une belle famille de 4 petits enfants et six arrière petits-enfants. Après une belle vie auprès des siens, Johnnie décède en Mai 2001.
Aujourd'hui, son petit-fils Brian Taylor continue de faire vivre sa mémoire. Nous avons échangé dans le cadre de ma recherche des Héros de Grandcamp et c'est un immense plaisir pour moi de pouvoir le mettre en lumière aujourd'hui face à ceux qu'il a aidé à libérer. Je suis certain que Brian sera heureux de voir notre reconnaissance dans les commentaires!
