ZOOM • « I Dream Here » by Kari Vehosalo
« I Dream Here » is an oil painting that depicts a surreal interior scene, with a woman lying on a bed, her face obscured by a black hole with brown edges, resembling a cigarette burn. Her right hand is raised, in a strange gesture, as if suspended between two realities. This hole, fluctuating between a black hole and a « cigarette burn, » refers to the visible defects in old films caused by reel changes.
The woman’s face, absorbed by the hole, becomes a metaphor for the disappearance of individuality, the subject, or the true nature of the scene. The painting generates a dreamlike atmosphere, where the overexposed light and the figure’s strange posture accentuate the unreal nature of the event. The blurring between sleep and wakefulness, reality and imagination, emphasizes a sense of liminality and the uncertainty of our time.
