In October 1942, Pte Bertha Joyce Ball, aged 21; on the right and Pte Iris Anderson Buck, aged 22, of the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS) learn how to service an Army motorcycle at an ordnance depot in Northern Command.

Pte Ball had served in the ATS for 4 months at this point. She is from Derby and worked previously in the Rolls Royce factory (A.T.B. Small Parts Department). She is now an ATS fitter in the motorcycle section of a Royal Electrical & Mechanical Engineers - REME workshop.

Pte Anderson Buck is from North Shields and previously worked in the NAAFI (Navy, Army, and Air Force Institutes) canteen. Her father was in the Merchant Navy. She had served in the ATS for 7 months at this point and is said to have found great interest working in a REME workshop.

South African Staff Nurse (Lieutenant) Daphne Emslie Wilmot Dennyssen was servng at 107 S.A. General Hospital in Italy, 1944 when this photo was taken. I had the great pleasure of meeting this totally amazing, wonderful and very humble Lady.

Her elder Brother Bombardier Daniel Arthur Dennyssen was serving in Italy with the 1/6 Field Regiment when he was Killed in Action on 04 July 1944 after stepping on a German landmine while assisting to prepare a Medium Gun Position during operations between Lucignano and Calcione.

Her twin Brother Dennis was a Telegraphist serving in the South African Navy aboard the Coastal Minesweepers on the Indian Ocean Station operating out of the Port of Durban.
