Meet the Dore Abbey Arts group - a collective of talented artists gathering to exhibit at the beautiful Dore Abbey during H.Art Week, 6–14 September 2025.

Today’s featured artist is:

Rew Wood

Website: https://www.rewsapothecary.com

How would you describe the work you do and why?:
Based on all my experiences with nature, I sculpt in a free fluid style to show the personalities and unique quirks of my subjects.
I sculpt in a variety of clays, fabrics and flotsam. I paint, guild and smith all manner of up-cycled materials to create my very broad range of products which are well observed, characterful, often amusing and even occasionally a little rude, but still very charming!

For you what does being an artist mean?:
for me the question of being an artist is an interesting one, as for me it is just a away of being, and has always been... for as long as I can remember I have made things... it is just in me, and the way i process and enjoy the world.

Describe what you call yourself/your practice?:
I am an observer of life, I have always been a watcher, and have always looked after and loved animals.
I consider myself a sculptor, come potter... inspired by my watchings of the world

Your practice & activities include e.g workshops, teaching:
I am based in the Marches between the river Monnow and the river Wye surrounded by ancient trees and free roaming wildlife. I live with my partner (sculptor Matthew Sanderson) and our three children upon a small-holding, with many creatures under our care, and a growing woodland to nurture.
My studio is here at home, where I teach workshops and one to ones in sculptural pottery, as well as running Sanderson sculpture, my partner Matts large scale metal work studio and my own smaller studio for my creating.

Julie Turner

How would you describe the work you do and why?:
My studio, situated in an area of historic welsh parkland, was the ideal location to explore the welsh obsession with spoons, given traditionally as a symbol of Love, from husband to wife.
My spoons, made from delicate porcelain and high fired, have grown from their functional roots into more symbolic and historically inspired pieces. Strongly associated with the tradition of Welsh Love Spoons they are complex structures of delicate, interwoven forms. Representing our friendships, relationships and families, they speak of the beauty and complexity of modern relationships.

For you what does being an artist mean?:
Being an artist is a way of life.

Describe what you call yourself/your practice?:
I am a potter, I've been working in the field of pottery for over 20 years. I am a maker and teacher.

Your practice & activities include e.g workshops, teaching:
I make and sell my own work as well as running my own studio, Troy Pottery, in Monmouth.

Your gallery outlets/stockists:
I sell through a wide range if galleries, national trust properties and online.
