The colours have come out bright and strong and the raw clay appears toasted. I am enjoying the simple look of the partially unglazed exteriors and seeing the shapes stand out on their own in their natural state.

The kiln filled with my work , I have now lit a flame underneath it and I am “ firing” today. What ever gave me the idea of making pots? Long story. I love it, I enjoy the variety of skills involved in making pottery…. Never a dull moment. A long day ahead tweaking the gas burners slowly up to 1280 degrees centigrade. Fingers crossed and the results will be here in a couple of days.

Never thought that installing a biomass boiler 11 years ago, I would be using the boiler room not just to dry clothes and wetsuits but also my pots so I can glaze them. Firing coming up … watch this space !

It’s firing day again …. Today I will be keeping an eye on the kiln, slowly putting up the temperature until it gets to 1260 degrees C or thereabouts. Towards the end of my previous firing I was given the wonderful news of being a grandmother again …. This caused instant distraction from the kiln which got just a little too hot and caused some of the pieces to “ bloat” , making them really bumpy. So today I made a rule …. Any significant announcement to be given before 18.00 please!! Having said all that, I do sometimes wonder why I have chosen pottery as my craft. I make things then cook them to a really high temperature in a gas kiln. Although I have an idea of how things will turn out , there is always an element of surprise. I think that is what keeps me going… I enjoy that.

Oops. The trouble with glazing pieces that have not gone through a first firing is that they are fragile. I can wash off the glaze and recycle it. Always learning.

I made these vases this morning. One of the many interesting things about pottery is using the same amount of clay to make different shapes. The shelves are filling up. Watch this space for glazing in a couple of weeks or so.
