A portrait is on the move!

Today, one of our George Washington portraits left us on loan to the Science Museum, London, where it will feature in the exciting upcoming exhibition 'Becoming America: How Science Shaped a Nation.'

Our portrait is a replica of Charles Willson Peale’s 1772 painting, George Washington as a Colonel Commander of the Virginian Colonial Troops.

We’re delighted to see this portrait take part in such an exciting exhibition. If you’re in London, be sure to pay it a visit!

Opening on 23 October, admission is completely free.

As if an event at the Washington monument wasn’t enough excitement, last week ended with a party at the UK Embassy in Washington to celebrate the King’s birthday. Wonderful for Sulgrave Manor to be represented at this fabulous event.

A black velvet jacket. A wardrobe scattered across two continents. And a historical mystery still being unravelled.

Sulgrave Research Fellow Timothy Long takes us behind the scenes of his research into George Washington’s surviving clothing and explains why Sulgrave Manor’s jacket is such an important part of the story.

From mysterious pocket discoveries to questions surrounding Washington’s presidential portraits, it’s a fascinating journey through clothing, conservation and detective work.

🐝We've noticed some new insects have settled in our garden! These Ivy Mining Bees were spotted by our head gardener nesting in the soil. Despite being solitary bees who don't follow a social structure, they can often be found nesting close together.

Their appearance at this time of year coincides with the Autumnal flowering of Ivy, which is their main and preferred food source. They are also a docile bee (the males don't even have stingers!), so he was able to take snap a couple close pictures without causing them distress. What a lovely discovery to represent the changing seasons in our garden!🐝

Did you know that Martha Washington spent brutal winters on campaign with George Washington during the Revolutionary War? She mended socks, raised money for supplies and raised morale among the troops. Come and see our exhibition on loan from The White House before we close on Sunday 27th September. The exhibition features trailblazing 18th Century American women.
