After the Ministry of Defence announced that they were withdrawing funding for the Chapel in March 2016, a campaign was launched to keep it open for perpetuity. An e-petition on the No.10 website attracted over 30,000 signatures - most over a period of high activity in early January 2015, resulting in substantial press and media interest, and the issue being raised in Parliament during Prime Minis
ters' Questions. In his 2015 budget speech, the Chancellor announced funding to maintain the Chapel as a memorial. The Biggin Hill Memorial Museum Trust was subsequently established to develop the St George’s RAF Chapel of Remembrance site, bringing the chapel and heritage centre together, to create the Biggin Hill Memorial Museum. The Biggin Hill Memorial Museum project is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Bromley Council. Architects Robin Lee Architecture and Exhibition team, Redman Design have been appointed to develop designs for the new museum. The project team and trust have also been undertaking community consultation and developing the museum’s exhibitions and collections based on the Museum’s Interpretation Report. Plans for the new museum can be viewed via the Trust’s website at www.bhmm.org.uk
The aim of this page, now that the future of the Chapel itself has been assured, is to share news and views about the Museum project, from all sources.
