Happy Volunteers' Week from Birmingham Museums! 🎉

Birmingham Museums Trust is supported by over 100 dedicated volunteers who give their time in a range of ways, from public engagement and education to behind-the-scenes tasks.

We are incredibly grateful for all the work that our volunteers do, and this week we will be celebrating their achievements and contributions with events across our sites.

On Saturday 12 June, join us at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery for a conversation where artist Christopher Samuel shines a light on unseen members of our communities, revealing the hidden experiences of Black and disabled people whose lives have gone unrecorded and successes uncelebrated, both historically and now.

This conversation reunites Christopher with Rebekah Mall, who took part in his Watch Us Lead project at Birmingham Museums.

On Saturday 6 June, visit Sarehole Mill for an afternoon of painting and Prosecco.

In partnership with Wild Earth Movement, we will be sharing natural pigments found in nature, herbs and spices to create a colour palette that can be used to capture Sarehole Mill, our millpond and its lush surroundings.

'In his classic work, Revolution in the Head, Ian MacDonald called The Beatles’ songs a ‘kind of evolved folk music’. But how far had this new music evolved by the time Black Sabbath came on the scene?'

In our latest blog, John Goodridge explores the working class background of Black Sabbath and how it shaped their creativity and resilience (link in comments).

Birmingham Museums Trust is one of eight museums across the UK partnering in a programme to transform their sites, boost biodiversity, widen access to nature and engage local communities in nature recovery.

Museums for Nature, launched by the Natural History Museum (NHM) on 26 May 2026, aims to support biodiversity and help address nature loss in communities nationwide.

Following the opening of its new gardens in 2024, in the programme’s first year the NHM is partnering with eight museums from Real World Science, a network of museums across the UK that use their national history collections in collaboratively developed national programmes to engage a range of public audiences with natural science, with plans to then expand to museums nationwide.

It's your last chance to see I photograph comedians! Photography by Andy Hollingworth at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery.

With nearly 80 images of studio portraits, rare contemplative moments off-stage and live stage performances, this exhibition celebrates some of the iconic comedy greats who entertained for decades, including Ken Dodd, Sean Lock, Rik Mayall and Victoria Wood, alongside portraits of current, established and rising stars, such as Maisie Adam, Rhod Gilbert, Rosie Jones, Sarah Millican and Paul Smith.

There is a strong local connection with comedians from Birmingham and the West Midlands such as Jasper Carrott and Stewart Lee featured, as well as brand new, never-seen-before portraits of Lenny Henry, Joe Lycett, Jo Enright and Shazia Mirza taken by Hollingworth especially for this show.

Visit before the exhibition leaves on Sunday 31 May.
