🦆World Curlew Day is celebrated today, 21 April to raise awareness and support conservation of curlews worldwide.

🦅The eagle-eyed amongst you may have spotted a pair of curlews hanging from the Judges' Lodgings Servant's Hall ceiling as part of our historic kitchen display. Thankfully, this is now a thing of the past with curlews now deemed a threatened species, but did you know until the 1940s it was fairly common to find curlews for sale in the butchers? They would have been treated similar to other game or wildfowl and be baked, braised or cooked in pies.

⛏️Archaeological digs at the Judges' Lodgings have revealed bird bones showing that our historic residents would have eaten a wide variety of waterfowl and waders like snipe, godwit and maybe even curlew.

🔭Today, if you'd like to spot curlews, head to nearby Morecambe Bay and its vast mudflats for a glimpse of curlews searching for food at low tide.

🔎See what else you can spot on a visit to the Judges' Lodgings- now open four days a week, Thursdays to Sundays 11AM-4PM

👪It's National Siblings Day! We thought we'd scour the Judges' Lodgings artworks for family groups and take a look into the Hulton portraits from our collections.

🎨William, Beatrice and Ann were the three children of Jessop and Mary Hulton. The Hultons were an ancient, well-established family in the area around Bolton and were heavily involved in Lancashire's justice system. William was born in 1717, Ann in 1718 and Beatrice in about 1722. William inherited the lands of Hulton Hall and the estates, whilst Ann and Beatrice married into other families of the gentry, Ann into the Winckley family of Preston and Beatrice into the Lister family of Gisburn(e). These paintings were probably done in the 1740s. If you look closely at the paintings of Beatrice (in blue) and Ann (in white) you will see they are the same body, just mirrored and with a different face and clothing.
