The Carriage Foundation, registered charity 1162356 A group of carriage experts and enthusiasts currently involved with the exciting project 'Carriages

In 1991 a small group of horse drawn carriage enthusiasts came together to form The Carriage Foundation. The aim of the organisation was and still is to preserve and promote the care, preservation and interpretation of carriages as an integral part of the history of transport. Over the coming years new members joined and the founder members were able to share their knowledge and expertise with oth

ers ensuring a continuation of specialists in the field of horse drawn carriages. Representatives now offer advice to organisations worldwide. Recently core members have been considering how the organisation can be more beneficial to a wider public audience. With the Charity Commission recently granting The Carriage Foundation charitable status, we now aim to manage, support and seek funding for various carriage related projects. Initially a website will be created which will host our first major project: ‘Carriages of Britain’. The project will consist of a searchable and illustrated database of carriages within UK collections, essays, and a photographic archive. Initial work has identified over 1200 carriages in publically accessible collections which will all have an entry on the database. ‘Carriages of Britain’ will become the first port of call for anyone wishing to research horse drawn vehicles. Further developing our work, The Carriage Foundation are hosting a series of study days through the winter as well as the two established study tours. Long term plans are to explore the possibility of founding a National Carriage Museum. If anyone would like to find out more about our work or be involved with our projects with research or financial support please do make contact.

We are absolutely delighted to announce that The Carriage Foundation have been awarded a grant of £3500 from The Pilgrim Trust.

This grant is specifically for the Dandy Carriages project - the two carriages in the Nottingham Industrial Museum that belonged to John Baskerville.

We have been working really hard researching the carriages and forming a plan to send them home to Birmingham. In two weeks time a door from the Landau will head off to the University of Cambridge, to their library where specialist digital imaging will take place and then on to the Hamilton Kerr Institute at the Fitzwilliam Museum where the paintwork will be analysed.

Hopefully we will find out lots of interesting things about the carriage, a full report will be published.

There is an update on this exciting project in the next issue of The Whiffle Tree which is shortly to be published.

So much has been going on with the CF of late, we are now getting back to normal following a period of stress! This grant and being able to kick start a massive and important project is just what we all needed to boost moral!

Did you know that The Carriage Foundation offers a carriage consultation service?

It all stemmed from the fact that we absolutely love to know about any old carriages that are out there and make a record of them. We have the fabulous 'Coach Makers of Britain' project that records the names of nationwide coach makers and this project really helps us to provide information to the many enquiries that we get in from people who are researching their family history and have come across a coach maker or coach painter.

So, the consultations all started there and moved on to offering advice on newly purchased carriages or providing information to people who were selling a carriage.

We love to help people to get to know their carriages a little more and can provide expert advice on originality and history of a coach maker or carriage type.

This service comes for free! So do be in touch and make use of us!

FULLY BOOKED!

A bit of a last minute thing - apologies!

The Autumn Study Tour was cancelled due to lack of numbers. We have to get more signed up these days and organise them more further in advance in order for them to be viable, but its really tricky for people to commit well in advance. Also the costs are an issue for many.

So, for a while, we are focusing on what is working for The Carriage Foundation, the Study Days and day visits.

There was a lot of interest in the visit to Peover Hall in Cheshire and the visit originally arranged as part of the Study Tour will be going ahead on Saturday 18th October at 2pm.

People will need to get themselves there.

Numbers are limited so please do be in touch as soon as you can to book your space.
