This week has been a wonderful mix of individual exploration, young creativity and adults pushing their artistic practice further.

Jamie and Katie both came in for one to one sessions, which are always a chance to really focus on personal development. In these sessions we look closely at what each student wants to achieve and work step by step to build confidence, technique and individual voice.

The Kids After School Art Club was full of imagination as always. It is such a joy watching young artists experiment freely with colour, shape and storytelling. Children naturally approach art without fear and that freedom produces wonderfully original work.

On Thursday afternoon the Create workshop for adults brought a different kind of energy into the studio. Working with pastels, students explored colour, atmosphere and composition. Some were trying completely new materials while others were finishing work they had started in previous sessions. The two hour format allows people to settle into the process, take risks and really concentrate.

One of the things I love most about teaching is seeing how different every artist’s work becomes once they start trusting their instincts.

From clay and painting to pastel work and imaginative drawing, the studio has been full of experimentation this week, while I continued working on my latest whale sculpture.

If you would like to join a class or explore your creativity again, feel free to get in touch.

Back in the studio after the art fair.

A quick tour of the paintings back on the walls and repairing a small scratch on my St Margaret’s Bay painting after all the moving around during the fair.

Standing on a chair to hang it… don’t do what I’m doing.

My grandmother used to say that while dressmaking with pins in her mouth. Some warnings clearly stay with you.

When I was 22, in the early 1980s, I had the privilege of meeting Marion Milner.

Milner was one of the early psychologists to explore what became art therapy. She wrote about drawing as a way of discovering the self — not as decoration, but as attention.

I visited her in her rooms and asked about her ideas. After a while she trusted me enough to show me some of her patients’ artworks. I remember realising that art was not simply about talent. It was about looking. About honesty. About giving the mind space to unfold.

That experience shaped how I teach.

Whether I am working with children or adults, I am not interested in quick results or copying. I teach drawing properly — how to see, how to observe, how to think independently.

Confidence grows from that foundation.

When I was 22, in the early 1980s, I had the privilege of meeting Marion Milner — one of the early pioneers of what became art therapy.

I visited her in her rooms and spoke with her about her thinking on drawing and the mind. Over time she trusted me enough to show me some of her patients’ work. I remember understanding, even then, that art was not simply about talent or producing something decorative. It was about attention, discovery and confidence.

That experience shaped the way I teach.

Whether I am working with children or adults, I am not interested in shortcuts or quick results. I teach drawing properly — how to see, how to observe, how to think independently. Confidence grows from that foundation.

I have been teaching art for over 35 years, including at university level, and for the past three years have been running children’s art classes here in Deal.

Depth matters.

One of the most meaningful parts of my teaching practice is working one-to-one with adults with SEND.

In a calm, focused studio environment, we work at an individual pace — building confidence, independence and genuine pride in what is created. There is no rushing and no comparison, only steady progress and real achievement.

I currently have two weekly spaces available for 1:1 sessions.

If you feel this could benefit someone you know, please message me — or tag a friend who may be interested.

Some of the most rewarding work I do each week is my one-to-one sessions with Katie and Jamie.

I teach them individually for two hours each, once a week, giving them time, space and focused guidance to develop their ideas at their own pace. There is no rushing and no comparison — just steady progress, exploration and discovery.

In these sessions I see confidence grow. I see concentration deepen. I see the pride that comes from completing a painting and knowing, “I did that.” That sense of achievement matters.

Creativity builds far more than a finished artwork. It strengthens decision-making, independence, resilience and self-belief. A calm studio, individual attention and flexible start and finish times allow each session to be shaped around the person.

I now have two 2 hr spaces available for weekly one-to-one sessions.

If you think this could benefit someone you know, please get in touch — or tag a friend who might find these sessions supportive.
