The Peacemakers Museum in the famous Bogside area of Derry in the North of Ireland explores how its residents endured decades of conflict and oppression before driving forward the peace process which culminated in the 1998 Good Friday Agreement.
The first section, known as 'False Dawns', explores how the no-go barricades which prevented British forces from entering the area were finally removed by a huge British army invasion in July 1972 and how a range separate peace initiatives pursued independently by the Republican Movement and the SDLP were rejected by unionists and the British government.
The section includes a range of archive images and films from the period including the memories of local residents, republican activists and others who were living in the area when the conflict was at its height. It also features a recreation of a typical house interior from the period and a range of other fascinating installations.
The Peacemakers Museum is a must visit for anyone who wants to learn how the peace we all enjoy today in the North of Ireland was won!
