We have welcomed some special visitors to Dronfield Hall Barn over the past week. On Volunteering Open Day, Sir Richard Fitzherbert, High Sheriff of Derbyshire paid a visit to tour the Barn and meet staff and volunteers, including our Archive team, Stewards and Gardeners.

To mark the opening of our new exhibition “Touching The Past”, the players from Drone Valley Brewery brought to life the folklore tale of the Poor Old 'Os to an audience of invited guests.

We love celebrating intangible heritage like traditional drama and storytelling so they are remembered, resurrected and recorded.

And we do enjoy welcoming a genuine knight in full regalia too!

This map shows the Wilson Cammell Dronfield Works and Silkstone Colliery on Callywhite Lane in 1875. Also marked are two dams (labelled as reservoirs), Damstead Works, Dronfield Mill, and the Dronfield Gas Works.

We're joining The National Lottery Heritage Fund in celebrating . Today we're showcasing the Dronfield Heritage Trust Archive & History Research Group.

We are a group of volunteers passionate about exploring and sharing the history of our town. We run exhibitions, publish local history books and have built an archive of over 11,000 photographs and many original documents covering Dronfield's schools, churches, industries and history groups.

One of our publications, Dronfield Our Changing Town, features striking “then” and “now” photographs of familiar locations around the Town. It is available to purchase from Dronfield Hall Barn.

Each year we host an exhibition in the medieval Dronfield Hall Barn. Our volunteers have been busy researching for this year’s exhibition, Touching Lives, (5-15 March) which shines a spotlight on the lives of ordinary townspeople.

📮 Coal Aston Post Office – A Little Local History 🏡

These photographs show the first Coal Aston Post Office on Brown Lane (now a residential house) and the second Post Office on Dyche Lane, which sadly closed in December 2003.

🕰️ The earliest mention of a postal service in Coal Aston dates to the 22nd April 1878 when Henry Pen*stone was appointed Postmaster of Coal Aston.

It’s not yet known exactly when the Post Office moved from Brown Lane to Dyche Lane.

In the 1939 Register, Florence A. Ryalls is listed as sub-postmistress. While no address is stated, its position in the register strongly suggests the Post Office was then on Dyche Lane.

📜 While digitising the old Dronfield Parish Magazines, we stumbled across this fascinating report from 1879 detailing a proposed new water scheme for Dronfield!

Major Hector Tullock of the Royal Engineers visited the Town Hall to inspect plans for two huge reservoirs—together holding 15 million gallons of water—to supply the whole town. Dr. Mackintosh even declared the water “very satisfactory,” and the scheme was considered so good they thought work could begin immediately!

This week some of our Archive Group volunteers have begun digitising the old Dronfield Parish Magazines, carefully scanning and preserving each edition for future generations.

Once digitised, they’ll become part of our growing Dronfield Hall Barn Archive, making them easier to access, study, and enjoy!
