Continuing with my Ellesmere paintings. The first one of The White Hart that I finished a couple of weeks ago sold straight away, so I've had to paint another one for the Ellesmere Art Festival exhibition! Original watercolour and pen, 8x6 inches.

I'm very happy to have been contacted by Oswestry Tourist Information and asked to provide some of my paintings for them to sell. 😊. They now have an urban sketch of Shrewsbury, my zentangle doodleart of Ellesmere as well as watercolours of the canal, the Mere at Ellesmere and the Berwyn mountain moorland.

The Oswestry Tourist Information has a wealth of local craft and artwork. It is truly well worth a visit! You'll find them at the back of the market hall in Oswestry.

The Old Town Hall in the centre if Ellesmere - the next urban sketch in my Ellesmere series! This one is quite small too, 15x10cm, and will be a part of my exhibition and for sale in the Ellesmere Arts Festival from 1st to 4th May.

A watercolour and pen sketch of my local, the White Hart in Ellesmere! This one's quite small, 10 x 15cm. I'm focusing at the moment on creating some urban sketches of our beautiful little town ready for the Arts Festival from 1st-4th May, where I will be exhibiting and selling my work in the market hall. 😀

My daughter, a climber, asked me at Christmas if I could "just do" a painting showing two specific mountains that she had conquered last year with her climbing buddy: Tryfan, in North Wales, UK, being one and the other being a crack in a rock face at Ailefroid in the French Alps. They both had helped each other overcome personal difficulties on these two climbs and so this was something very special for her.

It was really not easy, as I had to represent these two very different mountains in the same picture. After a couple of attempts I was happy with this final outcome and proudly handed over the original to my daughter and a signed 1/1 print to her climbing buddy this morning. 😀

I started the online Beginners Abstract Landscape course by the Australian watercolour painter, Scott Swinson, 18 months ago and have been gradually working through all the modules, practicing as I go.

I found the last module quite tricky. The sky! I just don't feel comfortable being that abstract!! Still!! 😅 This was my second attempt, am definitely not publishing the first!! 🤣🤣

Last summer my friend asked me if I could paint her a picture of our local pub, the White Hart in Ellesmere, for her newly decorated living room. She wanted lots of orange in the picture to complement the green walls. Well, at that point I'd only ever painted one urban sketch and wasn't at all sure if I could do this at all!

However, six months later after an online workshop, lots of practice learning about drawing perspective, composition and colour theory this was the final result. Luckily they liked it and it's now hanging in their living room on the green wall!

One of my first card swipes with watercolour! A bit of paint, just four colours, smeared on a plastic card, and a lot of water! A bit scary really, but also quite fascinating watching where the colours run to all by themselves when tilting the paper in different directions. I thought it was going to end up a green muddy mess, but when I stopped and started looking for shapes and things, it was amazing what I began to see and then coax out of the wet paint that was already on the paper. No brush was used, just a small knife to draw with, sometimes scratching into the paper itself, sometimes just lifting paint to reveal the colour underneath. Absolutely no guarantee of any success, but really quite fun!

I've been in bed with flu for 11 days now. Agh! But today I finally found enough energy to sit up and do some sketching with the added bonus of looking through some holiday photos of when we were in the Alps a few years ago. Can't wait to be able to get back into my artroom and have a go at painting them!

How do you decide on what colours to use??!! These are a series of sketches showing my thought development on this tricky subject!

The client said orange and green as they had an olive green living room, so I started there. But that looked very green and sombre and more suited to a peaceful village green scene rather than a country town scene. So next I focused on the orange, which really livened up the picture, particularly with an odd splash of red! But the next morning this all felt a bit much. Adding an indigo shadow didn't seem to help much either to cool things down.

With a fresh head after breakfast I decided to go for the complimentary colours orange and blue, but using the indigo, as in a light wash this was a lovely slate grey; adding burnt sienna into the palette to cool down the translucent orange and a splash of olive green on the cobbles in the foreground. However, the flood of dark blue water coming down the street didn't really fit! So this was dampened down and a crisp grey blue shadow added which will be more grey than blue in the final edition.

These were all just sketches to block the colours, now I have to brave a big piece of proper empty white paper!!
