Airfield Museum member Brian Render has continued searching the archives of the Halstead Gazette for RAF Wethersfield related stories.
His latest find was published on the 2nd June 1961 and relates to some filming at the base including in the Chapel. I wonder if this film still exists somewhere?

Here is a picture of the RAF Wethersfield based 20th Tactical Fighter Wing's C-47 ( Serial No. 43-48255) at the RAF Waddington airshow held on 16th September 1961.
The aircraft joined the 20th TFW in May 1960 and remained until struck off on 2nd June 1964.

Last year we asked for more information on a pic taken by Georger Pennick at the RAF Wethersfield airshow on the 1stJune 1968 and Glynn Evans gave us this summary. Many Thanks Glynn.

George Pennick was a british aviation enthusiast of consideable standing with many contacts in the USAF, he was a great friend of Dave Menard who was I believe in the fire section of the 20th TFW at Wethersfield. Dave later became an author of several books dealing with the subject of "century series fighters" and book titled "before centuries" which I own a copy of and is still available on line. George was also a great friend of Paul Bennett.

On the 25th May 1967, RAF Wethersfield hosted a very special aircraft in the very first F-111 swing wing bomber to visit the United Kingdom. This was a promotional visit as, at the time, the United Kingdom was planning to purchase 50 such aircraft although the order was subsequently cancelled.
Here is a superb picture of the F-111 at RAF Wethersfield. It was such a shame the resident 20th Tactical Fighter Wing relocated to RAF Upper Heyford on 1st June 1970 for the introduction of the aircraft.
It would have been awesome seeing them based at RAF Wethersfield.

Courtesy of Dallas Anderson, here we have a photo of a C-124C (0-20949). taken at the RAF Wethersfield Airshow held on the 1st June 1968. The aircraft belonged to the 17MAS, 436MAW.
Apart from a great shot of the aircraft, seeing all those cars in front brings back alot of memories. Cars like the Mark 1 Ford Cortina ( i had one) and Ford Anglia were very popular at the time

The RAF Wethersfield Airshow held on the 1st June 1968 featured a flying display by a Victor B2 (XM717) from 100 Squadron RAF Wittering.
Here she is in action.
During Operation Desert Storm in 1991, XM717 flew 42 operational sorties. The nose cone of the aircraft is preserved at the RAF Museum, Hendon

I really like this USAAF 416th Bomb Group photo that was taken at RAF Wethersfield on the 31st May 1944, simply noted as 'Combat Crew'.
I see young men, far from home, who are proud to serve their country in the cause of freedom. Their sacrifices will never be forgotten.

RAF Wethersfield Airshows would often attract aviation enthusiasts as they were able to see aircraft not usually featured at other shows.
The 1983 show held on the 30th/31st May featured not one but two OV-10As (68-3795 and 68-3799) from the Sembach based 601 Tactical Control Wing (TCW). Cliff Stone was on hand to snap one of them whilst on static display.
Nice pic.

Cliff Stone sent us some super aircraft pics taken at the RAF Wethersfield Airshow held on the 30th/31st May 1983 which we would like to share with you.
We continue with F-111F (70-2363) from the RAF Lakenheath based 48th Tactical Fighter Wing. This aircraft participated in Operation El Dorado Canyon in Libya on the 15th April 1986.
70-2363 was scrapped in 2010.
