👑 Why Mary, Queen of Scots Was Executed
She became queen at just six days old. She married a king, survived betrayal, lost her throne and spent nearly 19 years imprisoned by the woman who was both her cousin and her rival.
But why did Mary, Queen of Scots ultimately face the executioner?
After returning to Scotland from France, Mary's reign was consumed by political turmoil and scandal. Her marriage to Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley collapsed amid jealousy and intrigue. Then came the shocking murder of her secretary, David Rizzio.
Months later, Darnley was found dead under mysterious circumstances.
Suspicion soon surrounded James Hepburn, Earl of Bothwell and Mary's controversial marriage to him would destroy much of the remaining support for her rule.
Forced to abdicate, Mary eventually fled to England seeking protection from her cousin, Elizabeth I.
Instead, Elizabeth had her imprisoned.
For almost two decades, Mary remained under English custody. Then, in 1586, letters were uncovered that appeared to implicate Mary in a plot against Elizabeth.
On 8 February 1587, Mary was executed at Fotheringhay Castle.
But the question remains:
Was Mary, Queen of Scots a tragic victim of political conspiracy or did her own choices ultimately destroy her?
