We are sad to announce that Castleton Museum is scheduled for closure. It will be open as normal through the October half term and we hope that families will enjoy this last opportunity to visit during a school holiday. The museum will finally close before Christmas. The space occupied by the Museum’s displays will become available for commercial use but a small area will be reserved for wall-mounted displays. We hope to continue sharing interesting stories of our village history from a small selection of our archive of documents, photographs and artefacts, which can remain on site, but the bulk of the collection will need to be dispersed. Thank you to everyone who has visited and left appreciative reviews of the Museum, and followed our narratives on Facebook.

Behind the Scenes in Castleton Museum, a search through the archive of photos and newspaper cuttings reveals the story of Herbert (Bert) Marrison, the last rope maker in Castleton. About 10 families in the Village used to make rope, each family, including the children, using a particular ‘walk’ along which to carry out their task. For over 200 years, Bert’s family worked on one of the terraces in Peak Cavern, pictured, which are still on view to visitors.
Castleton rope and twine went all over the world, made into tow ropes, sash cords and washing lines. It was used down mines, in breweries, on ships, and until recently, all Castleton brides were given a washing line on their wedding day.

Behind The Scenes at Castleton Museum is a treasure trove of documents recording village life in the past, such as descriptions of the object pictured here. This is the water carrier used to bring water from Russet Well to people’s homes. Cuttings from the Manchester Evening News in 1892, stored in the Museum’s archive, describe the reactions of visitors to Castleton when seeing a young lad wheeling the fully laden contraption along the main street.
“ … we stop to notice a contrivance used by the villagers for conveying water from the brook to their dwellings …”
Shortage of space means that the water carrier is not on display in the Museum.

Behind the Scenes at Castleton Museum, Castleton School’s log book reveals how seasonal chores such as hay making and spring cleaning, kept children away from school and illnesses such as measles and diphtheria also had a major impact on attendance. A delivery of coal was very welcome after a spell of cold weather had caused the school toilets to be frozen for weeks at a time.
