Today is Clean Air Day.

It may look like a quirky little watering can, but this oil lamp was used by Ilford Borough Council on roads and street corners to warn vehicles off of pavements during air pollution events like the Great Smog of 1952 which led to local accidents, sickness and death 😷

It was a pleasure to give a tour of the Museum last week to Lieutenant Colonel David Utting DL VR, Representative Deputy Lieutenant for Redbridge.

Lt. Col. Utting is currently employed as the Clerk to the Gold and Silver Wyre Drawers, a City Livery Company, and was appointed RDL to Redbridge in June 2025.
