'Missed Connection' a 5 layer reduction lino cut. It is inspired by the hundreds of encounters we have on a daily basis, some of which have an impact, yet others are fleeting and easily disregarded. Faces & no faces, black and white & colour, movement & snapshot. I'd like to say that all were planned for intelligent, well thought out reasons, but most of the variation in my printmaking is down to experimentation and hedging my bets!

You never quite know how a print will turn out but when it doesn’t go to plan it becomes a battle to get to the end! I started this print about 12 months ago, got to layer 3 and then walked away, frustrated about how it was going. But I hate unfinished business, so I finally got round to the last black layer yesterday. There’s loads I’d do differently, but I’ve proved to myself even if it’s not working out as planned, it’s always worth finishing.

Meet our friend Apollo the Cockapoo who lives a few doors up from us. This 4 layer reduction Lino print was commissioned by our neighbour as a present for his daughter. There’s only 1 real Apollo, but it was interesting printing him in different colours making him a dog of many faces, all gorgeous of course!

Although most of the leaves have gone from trees, there is incredible beauty in the woodland at winter. I love the raindrops hanging from the bare branches. This reduction print is one from last year. I loved free styling the background using rollers and spatulas to apply different colours and layers of ink to give a murky wet winter look.

My gorgeous girl…..I’ve just finished this 4 layer reduction Lino print of our Gordon Setter, Florence, Floss for short. She brings us love and joy everyday, even when she helps herself to a kitchen work top snack, well, who wouldn’t, given half a chance!

Now for something completely different! Inspired by some of the free flowing work I saw at Ironbridge Print Competition, I am throwing caution to the wind and trying a spot of mono printing. Applying ink to a printing plate using spatulas, brushes and cotton buds this technique is my printing nemesis. I tend to judge success by how realistic my prints look whilst admiring other people’s seeming freedom to print with feeling rather than constraint. This process has been very liberating! Inspired by my dog walks in the birch woodland in Trent Park, Cockfosters, I like where this new found fluidity is taking me! Always learning!

Work in progress. My favourite place in the world. Returning to this one after a 2 month break. 2 more layers to go, but seeing the Dales come to life on a grey London day has put a smile on my face!

It's back to the city after a half term break and I've just finished this 4 layer reduction print 'Snowy Southbank'. I've always loved the funny Fishy lamp posts that line the Thames and came across one of my old photos recently. I've tried a couple of ways to recreate the out of focus element to the London Eye background. Firstly, leaving very little detail and using very subtle colour differences in the layers as shown in the first image. And secondly, double printing each layer of the London eye by moving my lino slightly to misregister it to create a fuzzy effect (normally a printers nightmare). Not sure which one works better. I like the clarity of the first but the softness of the second. Anyone have an opinion?

What an amazing day I’ve had at Ironbridge Print Competition Exhibition. I’m so proud to have my work hanging alongside such incredible talent! I feel very inspired to try new things, push my boundries and maybe break some of my internal print chains!
Also happens to be our wedding anniversary tomorrow so having an evening away with the other half. Thanks for putting up with my ink smudges all over the kitchen my love!
