Hi everyone,

I’ve been receiving a lot of private messages asking for bottle-digging and mudlarking locations. From this point forward, I won’t be responding to any messages or emails requesting site details.

Unfortunately, some of the locations I previously shared have been badly damaged — pathways have been wrecked and even dug up with machinery. I’m simply not willing to be responsible for that kind of destruction.

When I’m out in my hometown, I’ll continue to keep my exact locations private. If I mention a river, it may just be something general like the Thames or Medway — but the specific spots are for me to enjoy and share in my own way. I know this sounds selfish but oh wells!

I hope you understand, and thank you to those who continue to support what I do.

Happy mudlarking,

The Victorian Mudlark

Friday 31st October 2025, I ventured down to the foreshore for some unplanned mudlarking. The foreshore was full of surprises. I came across many things, but one find in particular left me stunned – a bottle with the seal 'MAX BRUNNEN'. It’s a German spa water bottle from Bad Kissingen, one of several wells in the area, each with different stamps. This bottle dates back to around the pre-1800s.
An absolutely stunning find!
It really is those unplanned mudlarks that bring the most shocking discoveries.
More on my YouTube channel soon + a write up in the magazine!

Pork pies! Around 150 years ago it would have held a penny’s worth of ink and been sealed with a cork dipped in sealing wax. Bought by rich and poor, these little bottles were an affordable answer to increase writing during the 19th century. Many of these little stoneware bottles were produced by men, women and children working in workhouses, and if you look carefully you will often spot the subtle marks they left on their work.
