If you are daunted by the vastness of celestial space and
the seeming unending nature of the universe, help may be
at hand in the next talk held by the Friends of the Galleries.
The talk will be given by astronomer Dr James More who has
been interested in astronomy since his school days. Educated
at Balwearie High School he went on to study astronomy and
physics at St Andrew's University achieving a doctorate in
cosmology from Edinburgh University.
He then followed his father into teaching eventually becoming
head teacher at Balwearie High School.
For those who want to feel more confident in their star gazing
and those interested in the universe the well-illustrated talk
takes place on Wednesday, September 17, in the Galleries'
Activities Room at 2 pm.
Admission is free but donations are always welcome.

His excellent illustrations will add to your feeling of wonder and appreciation of the universe of which we are a tiny part.

PLEASE VOTE for our project!

In 2024, a community-led campaign called 'You Decide' was launched to allocate £300,000 for community improvements in the Kirkcaldy area.
• Community Collaboration The 'You Decide' campaign is a collaboration between Fife Council and local communities, overseen by a steering group of residents from various areas. It invites applications for projects addressing priorities like cost-of-living crisis, community spirit, and local economies, with funding ranging from £500 to £15,000.
• Kirkcaldy Galleries Centenary Kirkcaldy Galleries will celebrate its centenary in 2025 with various exhibitions and activities. The Friends of Kirkcaldy Galleries have submitted a bid for a travel fund to help schools visit the galleries, addressing transportation costs from all parts of the surrounding areas.
The next part of the campaign kicks off with a public event at the Adam Smith Theatre, Kirkcaldy, on Saturday March 15, from 10am-4pm. This event will give members of the public the opportunity to browse information on all short-listed projects before casting their vote(s) for those they want to see funded.

Friends Visit to Markinch Parish Church. This will be a guided tour on 23rd May. The ancient Church has been undergoing renovation and in the course of the works several interesting discoveries have been made of arches and stairways which have been concealed for centuries. The Church has many associations with Scottish royalty: there is a royal apartment concealed in the tower for instance. A group of my friends had a guided tour in the autumn and all found it fascinating. The visit will also take in the Stob Cross, the Terraces and the Motte where justice was dispensed in the Middle Ages. If it is a fine day, the outing can be extended to a walk in Balbirnie Park and there are several good places for lunch in Markinch. The visit begins at 11.00 and there is no charge, though donations to the Church would be welcome.
