Leeds and District Traction Engine Club

Leeds and District Traction Engine Club Incorporating the British Fairground Society Some of these makers produced engines specifically for fairground.

The Leeds & District Traction Engine Club was formed in early 1960s by a group of enterprising enthusiasts who wished to promote and expand the propelled road vehicles in the area. The title and its location is most appropriate - for in the vicinity of Leeds there is a richness of industrial archaeology and the city once contained a large number of steam vehicle manufacturers, most of which origin

ated and were concentrated in Hunslet to the south of the city centre. The first traction engine rally organised by the club took place in the autumn of 1963 in the grounds of Harewood House between Leeds and Harrogate. During the ensuing years the club held many successful events at several locations within twenty miles of Leeds including Bramham Park, the Great Yorkshire Showground, various Leeds City Museum grounds and the Coal Mining Museum near Wakefield.
