D.E.M - 'Just one big happy family'

DEM specialises in the design of three-dimensional communicative environments that 'tell a story'. Vocational in nature, it has strong links with the exhibition and museum design industries which result in good employment prospects.

‘Design for Exhibition and Museums is one of very few university courses which really enhances your future career prospects as it

provides its students with excellent support in finding work after graduation.'
Fiona Pook, Student

The design of exhibitions for commercial and heritage interpretation is continuously evolving and presents many challenges to designers’ creativity and technical know-how. Exhibitions are primarily concerned with communicating ideas and explicit information purposefully to an audience in constructed and controlled spaces. Students learn how to manipulate space and structure, design graphics (often to a large scale), storyboard multimedia and theatrical presentations and develop an understanding of the process of researching, writing and editing exhibition content to make it accessible to the required audience. This could be a technically sophisticated audience at a trade-only commercial exhibition or, in contrast, a mixed family group enjoying a day out at their local museum or visitor centre. In essence, the programme produces designers who are ‘storytellers’ in three-dimensional space. Projects are extremely varied, integrating theory, professional studies, technology and skills with design to promote creativity, innovation and educational curiosity. This also develops good research habits and encourages a commitment to life-long learning. The core of the programme is its studio-based culture where students undertake project-based creative work involving a range of drawing, modelling, written and computer aided design skills to a high standard.

Employment prospects are extremely good. The programme has close and long-established links with the commercial exhibitions industry and with the museums world. We consistently place students at the leading studios in both fields. As well as design practice, students have career opportunities in education, theatre, media, public relations, marketing and event organisation.

Past graduates have found employment at organisations including Madame Tussauds, the Science Museum, the British Museum, and Imagination and Event Communications.
