Dan Freaker’s artwork caught my attention a couple of years ago, when Glasshouse was just months away from opening. I had been on a very short and completely magical trip to Marrakech, and when I first saw Dan’s paintings they took me right back there. These artworks somehow captured the heat, vibrancy, and architecture. They summoned my sense of wonder, and the feeling of being in unfamiliar and wonderful lands.

Dan’s been with us since we launched, bringing the kick of hallucinatory colour we needed. In 2 weeks we launch his solo exhibition ‘Portals’, and my word will this be a punchy one! 💥 🌈

Join us at the launch party on Thursday 4th June 6-9pm. The exhibition then continues until the 5th July and you can RSVP/ register for pre-sales via the link in bio. Hope to see you there folks!

⭐️ Introducing Sam Wood! ⭐️

When I first came across Sam’s work I was struck by its immediacy and energy. Sumptuous interiors looked quickly rendered with intuition, flair and a distinctive illustrative style. These spaces retain their grandeur and yet feel entirely fresh and contemporary.

I have loved getting to know Sam over the last few months and I am delighted to welcome him to the Glasshouse stable with a gorgeous collection of works online and in the gallery. Swipe 👉🏼 to explore some of these, and find them online via the link in bio!

Sam is an East London based artist, illustrator and muralist. His works employ oil paint and soft pastel to explore the natural world and the urban environment - rich in a sense of colour, immediacy, playfulness and texture. His subject matter ranges from botanicals, sprawling gardens and landscapes to architecture and interiors.

His work has been showcased in commercial commissions and collaborations with brands and design studios internationally. Recent commissions include work for Claridges Hotel, Belmond Group, Harrods, Raffles London and Billecart Salmon Champagne.

This quiet beauty is ‘Aurora’ by Fiona Fouhy. A framed original monotype measuring 61 x 35 cm.

Here Fiona narrows her focus and this one, tall tree draws all of our attention. With that gentle colour gradient of warm, creamy white to dark grey, our eyes travel smoothly up the artwork.

The title meaning ‘Dawn’ - this piece describes an ‘in-between’ time of day - still heavy with darkness but with an intimation of light. A mysterious time which can provoke imagination - our mind suggesting things that may not truly be there.

Today let’s take a close look at ‘The River Kept Singing’ by Fiona Fouhy.

This original monotype is a unique piece and part of a series of works inspired by a woodland area in Highams Park. From the delicate ferns in the foreground to the slight, wobbly reflections in the water beneath the fallen branch - this piece is completely enchanting. In it’s soft grey palette, it has a gentle and ethereal beauty which feels timeless.

Let’s go back in time a few weeks to when this large-scale original monotype arrived back from the framer!

I am utterly enchanted whenever I feast my eyes on this beauty, and it has a starring role in our current exhibition ‘Through a Glass, Darkly’.

‘Magnetic Field’ has been living up to its name and bringing many intrigued passersby into the gallery. I love how Fiona uses layers of ink to create atmosphere and depth - pulling us through those towering trees and moving us towards the light. 🙌🏼

In 3 weeks the gallery will be transforming once more! We are SO excited to be diving into the kaleidoscopic colour and expressive mark-making of Daniel Freaker.

Daniel’s new collection of paintings will take us on a journey through liminal spaces. Join us as we enter semi-fictitious worlds suspended in time, where architectural forms meet botanical wilderness. Expect hallucinatory, joyful and otherworldly vibes.

RSVP to the launch party and/or register for pre-sales via the link in bio. And please note this launch opens on a Thursday instead of our usual Friday to collaborate with celebrations. What a fantastic time for this borough, we hope to see you there!

👀 It’s when you draw close to Fiona Fouhy’s artworks that you notice how painterly they are…

Despite a common assumption that this work is photography, Fiona actually works with sticky black inks and oil paint to build her layered and monochromatic forest-scapes.

Today let’s take an intimate look at some of the delicious, painterly marks in this new collection. From soft, feather-like strokes to gestural lines through a velvety black, these intricate details reveal the careful work that goes into each piece.

‘Epping Oak’ is a special and rare piece in Fiona Fouhy’s new collection because it was actually created deep in our local ancient woodland, Epping Forest.

Sensory immersion in the landscape has always been important to Fiona, and she has taken this one step further here - drawing with ink ‘en plein air’ to capture this magnificent oak tree.

Look closely (swipe 👉🏼) and you will see marks full of immediacy and intuition - loose and expressive as she observes the tree and forest floor around her.

Fiona’s physical connection to this space is palpable, and because of this she brings us into the forest too - the drama and grandeur of it surrounding us.

Whilst Fiona Fouhy has been making artworks which explore her sensory experiences of the forest for many years, in this new collection we see the introduction of the circle! So why the circle?

This shape has come to represent many layers of thinking, but one of them has a direct connection to the tools she uses to better observe her environment. Fiona uses a range of hand lenses and camera angles. From the wide perspective of the fish-eye lens to the close detail of the magnifying glass, these tools distort the information we see - creating imperfect viewpoints. Fiona embraces this lingering strangeness, enjoying the shifts of perspective as the forest floor becomes an otherworldly and extraordinary landscape.

This also shines light on the exhibition title ‘Through a Glass, Darkly’ and I love how these circles also look like little portals to the forest. Why not pop in and take a look this weekend?
