Kites of Liberation: Slash Art's has started a new residency at the Casa de Saude Psychiatric Hospital near Lisbon with Koji and Coco as resident artists, from 16-3 to 27-3. Kites are a metaphor for freedom, joy, memory, childhood. Each kite embodies a unique journey: a declaration of hope, a reflection on struggle, and a gesture toward possibility for the hospital users, simultaneously destigmatizing this form of outsider art.

Portraits from the Cellar.
In a quiet kitchen conversation, a hidden world was revealed. Portraits from the Cellar showcases the long-unseen works of Martine Charalalbou - an artist whose life today is filled with family, community, and creative facilitation. But before motherhood and civic engagement, Martine painted. Intensely. Intimately. And brilliantly.
This exhibition brings to light a remarkable collection of portraits that spent over fifteen years tucked away in the shadows of her basement. Each canvas is a window into a time when Martine worked on commission, capturing faces with a fearless hand and a masterful eye. The subjects span the personal and the provocative: family members, friends, self-portraits, and drag-queens —each rendered with a distinct emotional charge. Some pieces are swift impressions, others are deeply layered studies. All are marked by her confident brushwork, nuanced palette, and striking compositional instincts. The mood shifts from serene to unsettling, from quiet introspection to bold confrontation.
This is not just a show—it’s a rediscovery. A celebration of an artist whose past work pulses with relevance and raw beauty. Step in. Reflect. Be moved.

This is an exposition of portraits by spanning over 20 years! They were unearthed and then selected by Slash Arts from many canvases that had been long hidden in my basement. You are invited to the gallery boat any time over the 3 days, Martine and Simon will be there ready to chat, chill and connect while a lot of watchful eyes from the portraits follow us around!

Kites of Liberation celebrates freedom, resilience, connection. Through the symbolic act of kite-making, community participants, typically external to exhibited artworks, collaborated with professional artists to explore the essence of transcending constraints, both personal and collective. Each kite embodies a unique journey: a declaration of hope, a reflection on struggle, and a gesture toward possibility, simultaneously destigmatizing this form of outsider art.
This exhibition proudly presents the creative outcomes of workshops conducted across various community groups, including the Claremont Project, Muriel Street Care Home, and Solidarity Hub. Artists converged to design, paint, and construct kites, transforming them into potent symbols of liberation. Their creative expressions extended beyond visual art to encompass written reflections and poetry, thereby enriching the project with profound depth and diverse voices.
The exhibition will be animated by Neverland Space Theatre by a kite-themed performance entitle fAirground involving dance and music, as well as the use of AI to transform words into images. We extend our deepest gratitude to all the artists who contributed their creativity, courage, and insight to this project. Their invaluable work forms the very soul of this exhibition.
Special thanks to Martine Charalambou at Claremont Project, Jiarong Yu and Pooja Tanwar at Muriel Street Care Home, and to Colin Moorcraft.
Finally we express our heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Polly Wootton and her Partners for graciously hosting the exhibition at Killick Street Health Centre. This is the second of Killick Street’s groundbreaking ‘Art in Practice’ series of exhibitions using the surgery reception which is visited daily by patients as a space to exhibit art celebrating community visions and voices.
