NOW OPEN 🔥 RAVE TO THE GRAVE ft Yushy

This exhibition captures three years of Cardiff’s underground drum & bass culture through immersive, first-hand imagery and narrative.

Born from Yushy’s serendipitous entry into the scene as a university photographer in 2017, the project chronicles every kind of event in the city – from sprawling warehouse raves to intimate gatherings – and documents the raw energy, community bonds, and expressive freedom of the scene in motion.

“What I’ve come to realise is that I’m not a photographer, I was in a School teaching. People don’t want to hear that, they tell me I’m a photographer because of the photos I took but I wasn’t, I was a school teacher and photography was a tool.”

To mark the return to school, we’re looking back through the archive at the work of George Plemper, a teacher who used photography as a way to document the young people he taught in South East London during the 1970s.

His Thamesmead Youth archive offers a unique glimpse into everyday school life, capturing the moments and experiences that made up their world.

This was our first ever object donation, a 1970s school satchel belonging to Joan, who customized it with graffiti dedicated to Reggae, Soul, Ska, and most importantly Ed, her first love! The school planners in the background were donated by Hayley Jay Garret.

From its roots in the 1960s to becoming the world's biggest street celebration, Carnival has been bringing communities together, using sound, culture, and joy to bridge generations.
