TONIGHT: Cardion Arts presents Richard Maguire in residence at 9 Lower Mall, Hammersmith / 5-8pm.

Join us for an intimate evening celebrating and showcasing the residency of Richard Maguire, who formerly exhibited in our Talisman exhibition. Set in a picturesque house on the river, this significant location has been a home and haven for creative homos*xuals and bohemians who enriched the cultural life of the eras in which they lived. We’re so excited to continue that tradition with Richard Maguire.

Maguire’s artistic practice is rooted in the intersections of s*xuality, colonialism, and the intellectual exchange between Britain and Asia. Through meticulous research that directly shapes the narrative structure of the work, he creates small-scale graphite drawings sourced from archival materials.

Hope to see you there!

Cardion Arts are delighted to announce an intimate evening with Richard Maguire (Talisman Artist) on 12 September at 9 Lower Mall, Hammersmith in London - a stunning historic waterside home where Richard has been hosted by Cardion Arts and 9LM in an artist residency for a month.

Richard Maguire’s artistic practice is rooted in the intersections of s*xuality, colonialism, and the intellectual exchange between Britain and Asia. Through meticulous research that directly shapes the narrative structure of the work, he creates small-scale graphite drawings sourced from archival materials.
For more than 150 years, 9 Lower Mall, Hammersmith, has been a home and haven for creative homos*xuals and bohemians who enriched the cultural life of the eras in which they lived (Source: BBC 3 Podcast, A Most Q***r House).

Richard Maguire’s experience at 9 Lower Mall has been one of intellectual and historical discovery. By immersing himself in the environment of the parlour - with its eclectic collection of books on s*x, Indian miniatures, Orthodox icons, and a Javanese mask - he became deeply engaged with the concept of a sedimentary history.

The house will be open to guests 5-8pm. Please feel free to pop in and join us for a drink at anytime between those hours.

9 Lower Mall is a historic building with limited access other than by narrow stairs.

RSVP Required - link in bio.

Wow - where do we start. Working with q***r artists and art proves time after time that art remains one of the strongest tools for change and calling to action. For this exhibition we decided in light of the recent sociopolitical events, to present somewhat of an ‘other-worldly’ personal presentation of q***rness. Remembering the personal items, symbols and meanings that carry us through our q***red lives gave birth to the concept of Talisman.

Firstly, a huge thank you to all of the artists involved and for trusting us with your work. Being able to work with some of the most talented names in art (who also happen to be q***r!) brings us nothing but joy - especially when raising vital funds for our partner charity ‘akt’. Your commitment to showing art for positive change within our community is more than we can ask for.

For all supporters, collectors and visitors of the exhibition - you really carry the success of this exhibition. Visiting and telling your friends/colleagues, sharing on social media or simply just popping in supports not only q***r art and our selected artists, but the future of q***r art and the q***r youth we fundraise for.

To the Talisman team and Museum of Transology, our performers, photographers and videographers, workshop coordinators, security, install team, Madame F - THANK YOU! When we launched Ultraviolet last year we never expected to make a typical ‘annual’ exhibition as part of our programming - but with the feedback from last year and the enormous response this year, we can’t stop here!

To allow us to continue what we’re doing, keep sharing, keep telling your q***r friends and allies, and keep loving q***r art. See you soon.

The Talisman team x

Talisman is a group exhibition of LGBTQIA+ artists, curated by Gemma Rolls-Bentley and E-J Scott, exploring the objects, people and symbols we turn to for protection. The show presents a space of collective sanctuary shaped by leading q***r artists and selected early / mid-career voices. Works explore q***r spirituality, the supernatural, healing, bodily sanctity, and community resilience.

Curated by Gemma Rolls-Bentley and E-J Scott, with assistant curator Katie Della-Valle.

Notoriously titled the ‘Patron Saint of Darkrooms’, Ajamu X is showing a photographic work in Talisman, Cardion Arts’ annual LGBTQIA+ exhibition.

Ajamu X is a darkroom/fine art photographic artist. His theoretical provocations, and aesthetics unapologetically celebrate black q***r bodies, the senses, pleasure as politics and the sensual material attributes of the print. His work has been shown in many prestigious museums and galleries worldwide and has been published in a wide variety of publications and critical journals.

Zach Toppin’s paintings (2) are featured in our Talisman exhibition which is now extended until August 10!

Toppin is a London-based multidisciplinary artist. His work is an investigation, celebration and honouring of q***rness and identity struggle, weaving stories about emotion, gender, desire, longing, s*x and love. A collaging of his own explorations and an archiving of those of his q***r community and ancestors, he finds through it a way to navigate the dichotomy of trans unease and euphoria. Toppin makes work about the languages of masculinity and q***r culture—the external signifiers we use to build identity fantasies. Clothing becomes not just fabric, but opportunity; a tool to transcend gender. The fetishisation of items, possessions, symbols, relics-the ways we use them in rituals of existence, in our presentations of self, building inner strength through exterior armours. It thinks about time travel, secret messages, building portraits and personal narratives through scrupulously combined items, sending messages of care, communion, struggle, heartbreak. It gives intimate insights into a private trans life.
