Lucinda Burgess, Atlantic Series (2026)

Created during the artist’s residency on the Atlantic coast of Ireland at the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation, this series of six works on handmade Japanese paper allows seawater, salt, and humidity to act directly on the surface. Ink washes interact with mineral deposits and atmospheric moisture, leaving delicate traces of immersion, drying, and transformation.

Rather than depicting the landscape, the works register the Atlantic itself as an active force. Each piece becomes a quiet record of time, exposure, and the subtle agency of natural processes.

On view in Morphosis at Bartha_contemporary, extended until May 16th, by appointment.

In Morphosis, colour is neither a stable surface nor a purely optical phenomenon; it is a record of immersion, a negotiation between fibre and mineral, intention and atmosphere. Through this subtle expansion of relational thinking into the domain of material transformation, Burgess situates her work within a lineage of disciplined inquiry while pressing it toward a contemporary sensitivity attuned to ecology, duration, and the quiet labour of preservation.

Ahead of Lucinda Burgess forthcoming exhibition ‚Morphosis‘ we recently published a Journal about her recent residency at the Albers Foundation on the Atlantic coast of Ireland. (link in bio)

In this extended interview, Christian Furr reflects on a career shaped by curiosity, discipline, and a quietly mischievous sense of humour. From his early years and move to London to the evolution of his celebrated Fish and Cheese Paintings, Furr speaks candidly about painting as a lived, physical practice shaped as much by Old Masters as by markets, meals, and everyday encounters.

The conversation also traces the story behind his year-long presentation in the Grill Room at the Devonshire Soho, where his works sit naturally within one of London’s most atmospheric interiors, dissolving boundaries between art, ritual, and daily life.

Two new cast reliefs by Mike Meiré anchor our current exhibition, I WISH YOU WELL, each revealing how the artist pushes the language of his Eternal News Series into distinct material and emotional registers.

COSMIC RETREAT (2025) is formed in bronze and treated with a palladium wash that gently oxidises the metal. The golden warmth of the bronze transforms into a soft, muted surface, allowing painterly nuances to emerge from the fossilised page. Its central fold turns inward, as if the work draws breath, inviting a moment of introspection within its calm, atmospheric depth.

INNER CONSTITUTION (2025) takes the opposite stance. Cast in blackened bronze, its outward fold thrusts the raw, torn surface of the original newspaper directly into space. The texture is bold, almost primal. Here, the fragility of the printed page becomes a forceful presence, insistent and coarse.

Together, the works speak to Meiré’s ongoing exploration of how fleeting information becomes material memory. Newspapers that once circulated for a single day now return as enduring objects, carrying their histories in metal.

I WISH YOU WELL continues until December 19th at Bartha_contemporary, tracing the tension between the disposable and the monumental, the urgent and the resilient.

Currently in residence with The Josef and Anni Albers Foundation in County Cork, Lucinda Burgess is advancing a new body of work shaped by the shifting light, Atlantic winds, and the immediate relationship between studio and landscape. Her time in Ireland is sharpening her focus on nature’s rhythms and their influence on colour, form and structure. The resulting works will be shown at Bartha_contemporary next spring.
