Crab Museum

Crab Museum Europe’s #1 Crab Museum and a satisfyingly baffling tourist attraction. Honestly, it’s quite hard to explain. Opening 2021.

A few years ago, researchers from the University of Bristol found that like the spiders we mentioned a few days ago, ticks also make use of electrostatic electricity to find their way to their hosts.

While they can’t travel the extraordinary distances that spiders can through ballooning - they are able to utilise their host’s static energy to ‘jump’ across gaps between blades of grass and a delicious deer leg. Their own tiny bristle-like hairs connect with the static a little like when you rub a balloon on your hair.

As we head toward the warmer months, please do touch grass, but if you’re in an environment where ticks are likely, wear trousers and check yourself.

Other than that, just let be ticks be ticks y’all,

As Summer in the UK begins in earnest, many of you we hope will be heading to the seaside to take in the good air and rejuvenate your souls by looking at a large body of water.

Many of you will also be taking to the coastal habitats to build sand castles - a time honoured tradition .

For our June calendar entry we've got an unbelievably excellent work of art by James Nicholls. In this historical work we can see the famous invasion of 12th Century Dover by crabs. Historians debate in heated terms whether this depiction is accurate, and recent archaeological excavation has suggested the giant beach ball was more likely sited on the North East of the castle during this period.

We hope you enjoy this month's calendar entry as much as we did and from everyone at Crab Museum, we hope you have a great month - whatever you get up to.

Did you know that we offer a 'this lifetime and the next' friendship package?

It ensure that you can be a friend of the museum straight after reincarnation. A small £20 administrative fee guarantees that whatever form you return as, you will think crabs are cool as heck.

This friendship package is not applicable if you escape the endless cycle of death and rebirth.

We’re sick to the gills of explaining this.

However if you have visited the museum you’ll know that we also host a second museum in our bathroom - the Carb Museum.

Check it out next time you visit.

It's BRAIN TIME SUCKAS!

That's right! We're releasing the hotly anticipated spiritual sequel to A Natural History of Bums! But this time we're diving deep into the folds of the squishy grey matter we call a brain!

Our second book, The No-Brain Brain Explainer comes out on the 11th of June, and we're dizzy with excitement to share it with you all! With beautiful artwork from the wonderful Bruno Valasse, it is full to the bursting brim with all the endlessly cool, infinitely bamboozling, and wildly weird brain info you could ever hope to know.

Join our human brain protagonist, Brian, as they journey through the world's thinking creatures and come up against some of nature’s greatest minds. The spectacular diversity of non-human thought is laid bare and open, like a book, for you all to enjoy.

If you liked bums, you're sure as heck going to love BRAINS!

The No-Brain Brain Explainer comes out on the 11th of June 2026 from Wide-Eyed Publishing

First we pivoted to bums, then we pivoted to a Football Ultras merch range, something no museum has ever been brave (or reckless) enough to attempt.

But in two days time we'll be sharing our latest wild pivot - so stay tuned, but we promise it'll be a doozie!

See you on Saturday!

Using the combined power of electrostatic energy and their webs, some spiders can travel long distances by air. A phenomenon known as ballooning, it is commonplace for spiderlings (young spiders) to use this airborne mode of travel to spread far and wide.

When atmospheric conditions are right, the spider in question will clamber to an elevated position, raise its abdomen to the sky and release several webs into the wind. These webs create a kind of sail, or kite, which loft the spider up and away allowing it to travel up to hundreds of kilometres away.

How the spiders are aware of the electrostatic energy in their environment is more rightly a question for the spider museum, but we are absolutely here for it if there are any experts out there.

Based on what we know about crabs and their sensitive setae (the bristle-like hairs across their bodies), perhaps it has something to do with that?
