To celebrate the versatility of the bicycle on this , here is a photograph of Lieutenant Hugh Francis, Royal Flying Corps, with his bicycle in February 1918. This photo was taken in the village of Kelvedon after Lt Francis successfully completed a forced landing after flying from Orford Ness, the Armament Experimental Station. Hugh served in 98 Squadron and 102 Squadron in France and later went on to serve in the Australian Flying Corps.

Who spotted the Beaver on Friday? 👀✈️

If you didn’t see it, you probably heard it! 😂

It was great to see the Historic Army Aircraft Flight back in action, with our Half Term visitors treated to a wave from the pilot, Al 👋

Views like this are just one of the reasons to visit our Apache Café. Great coffee, homemade cakes, tasty lunches, and lovely staff are a few more! ☕🍰🥪

See you there!

This week is Volunteers Week, and we’d like to say a huge THANK YOU to all the incredible volunteers who support the Army Flying Museum.

Our dedicated volunteers are at the heart of everything we do. They generously give their time, skills and expertise across a wide range of areas, from supporting educational visits, family activities and events, to providing technical and engineering knowledge, sharing amazing photographs, caring for our collections, assisting in the Archive, leading tours, and supporting us with delivering our annual fundraiser, Wallop Wheels & Wings.

Their commitment and passion make an enormous difference, helping to create memorable experiences for our visitors whilst ensuring the Museum remains a welcoming, inspiring and engaging place for all.

We would also like to pay tribute to our Trustees, whose leadership helps shape the Museum’s future, and our Development Committee, whose efforts raise vital funds to support our work. Together, they play an essential role in helping us preserve and share the story of British Army aviation for future generations.

To all our volunteers, past and present, thank you. Your dedication, enthusiasm and support are invaluable, and we simply couldn’t do it without you 🙏

A look back to last week and the arrival of a special guest ahead of the AAC Veterans’ Lunch at the Museum ✈

Friday marked the 80th anniversary of the first flight of the de Havilland Chipmunk. To celebrate this milestone, a number of Chipmunks will be on static display at Wallop Wheels & Wings 2026 on Saturday 11 July 🤩

Amongst them will be this beautiful late-build Chipmunk, originally operated by the Army’s Basic Fixed Wing Flight at Middle Wallop.

Middle Wallop is a fitting place to pay tribute to the much loved Chipmunk, an aircraft which has trained generations of British Army Pilots and Groundcrew.

Don’t miss the chance to see this wonderful aircraft up close
