Some works do not shout.
They wait with you.

Opening on Wednesday 3 June, Mat Collishaw’s Last Meal on Death Row brings a quieter, more unsettling register to Of Myths and Murals.

Known for works that pair seductive beauty with darker moral and psychological questions, Collishaw turns here to the final meals requested by condemned prisoners in the United States.

In these works, ordinary food becomes charged with ritual, mortality and meaning. A plate, a drink, a final choice. Familiar things, held in a very different light.

Presented in the First Floor Georgian Galleries, the exhibition offers a powerful contemporary counterpoint to the movement, humour and theatricality elsewhere in the season. It asks us to pause, and to consider the strange closeness of comfort and dread, beauty and unease, the everyday and the profound.

What makes art modern?

On Thursday 4 June, join us for a fascinating afternoon exploring Roger Fry: artist, critic, curator, Bloomsbury thinker and one of the great sparks behind modern British art.

At 2pm, writer and journalist Fiona McKenzie Johnston will discuss her new book, Roger Fry: Bloomsbury and the Invention of Modern Art, in conversation with journalist and curator Catherine Milner.

Fry helped bring the radical colour, form and feeling of Post-Impressionism to Britain, introducing audiences to artists including Cézanne, Van Gogh and Gauguin. His ideas shook up the art world, challenged old certainties, and opened the door to a new way of seeing.

The talk accompanies the current Roger Fry exhibition at The Museum of Somerset in Taunton, the first major show in more than 25 years to explore Fry as a painter, with vibrant portraits, landscapes and interiors revealing the artist behind the ideas.

Make an afternoon of it with lunch in The Restaurant before the talk, or stay on for dinner afterwards as we celebrate our new seasonal menu and evening dining, Wednesday to Saturday.

Expect Bloomsbury brilliance, modernist energy, stories of artistic rebellion, and a fresh look at the man who helped change the course of British art.

Thursday 4 June, 2pm
Tickets £5
Talk lasts approximately one hour

🐸 A frog, a song, a staircase full of creative commotion. 🐸

Sir Quentin Blake’s mural, The Joy of the Frog, brings a glorious sense of movement and play to The Sherborne. Created as a contemporary counterpoint to Sir James Thornhill’s historic staircase mural, it fills the space with music, theatre, performers, children, artists and all the backstage energy of imagination at work.

Look closely and you will find a whole world leaping into life. 🐸
