Whoops, I missed 3 sowings recorded out of sequence in Chris’s diary, as follows:

Maybe the fruit bushes helped to protect the cabbage seedlings, or perhaps he was simply using the space until the seedlings were ready to plant out.

100 years later, we’re documenting the new season on Chris’s Nottingham allotments.

His diary entry lists:

Garden Seeds 1925
Autumn Giant Cauliflower
Leeks Prize Taker
Savoy Large
Brussels Giant Prize
Eclipse Cauliflower
Cauliflower Brocoli April queen
Offenham Cabbage

While I was taking cuttings from my fruit bushes at the weekend, I recalled seeing these snippets in grandad’s diary. He wrote “Struck 6 Black Currants Otc 1941” and “Struck 6 Black Currants Oct 1943”.

These are the only occasions he records propagating blackcurrants, and the diary spans 1924-1961, so I wonder whether he was responding to wartime instructions to gardeners to grow more crops that provide vitamin C.
