Owston Ferry Smithy & Heritage Centre A real blacksmith shop that closed its doors and never modernised. Now a visitor centre that was built in 1859, with two working forges and a shoeing shop.

Built in 1859 and successively owned by 5 generations of the Laming family, the Smithy was left undisturbed until acquired by the Owston Ferry Heritage Society after the death of the last family member. The restored building was reopened in 1992. Visitors will find the forge, including the grime, just as it would have been, and unusuall

y two forges with an array of fascinating Blacksmiths tools. The Shoeing shop, large enough to enable two horses to be shod simultaneously, houses displays and assorted agricultural implements, many used in the drainage of the flat local landscape. A pleasant courtyard displays handmade agricultural machinery that would have been used locally, and up the stairs is an intriguing museum which provides a insight into living and working on the Isle of Axholme, with many items from the Isles past and an impressive collection of photographs as well as information and data for local family historians. Around the festive season the Old Smithy transforms into a magical Grotto for the real Father Christmas to visit. OPENING TIMES: Our Museum Season is May - Sept. Please see our posts for specific dates & times. There may be blacksmith demos on some of our open days. We welcome visits at other times by appointment. Admission Adults £4, children £1. Cash or Card payment.

Thank you to all our volunteers for helping run "Santa at The Smithy". Thank you to all our supporters who donated raffle prizes and/or spent money with us. Thank you to the children who came to see Santa.

Ho! Ho! Ho! Santa’s had a busy afternoon at The Smithy today, but remains committed to spending some time with us tomorrow (Sunday 14th) and next Saturday (20th), both between 2 and 5pm. Lovely and warm indoors by the fire, with famous raffle, gift stall, refreshments and festive cheer aplenty: come and join us!
