The Fell Pony & Countryside Museums at Dalemain

The Fell Pony & Countryside Museums at Dalemain This page links through to the Fell Pony & Countryside Museums at Dalemain which I have maintained since 2000.

The FP & C Museum web site has existed since 2000 when I built it as part of my MSc. I am gradually updating the material and may have to redesign for mobile platforms sometime (not too soon, I hope, as it's huge...150 or so pages). To seek permission to use any text or images from the site please contact me. I will usually be happy to let you share material for no charge provided you reference the site as the source.

The museum is open this autumn.

The Agricultural and Fell Pony Museum is open and free to visit this Autumn. Home to an eclectic collection of farm equipment which Robert McCosh started collecting in the 1970's when he noticed they were being replaced by more modern means of farming; it gives a fascinating insight into a time gone by.

Sedbergh Book Festival at the end of May - booking for talks and events is now open.
I've said I will talk about "13 Reasons Not to Write a Historical Novel".

‘What are Words Worth?’ Yes it’s a great pun, especially if you live close to the Lake District but our great poet is not the theme of the festival. We live in “interesting times” which are very difficult to understand and to live with, we cannot even trust that truth itself exists any mor...

It's always fun when a bit of new information comes to light.

I bought this copy of the print on eBay after seeking the original for more than 10 years! The seller thought it must have come from an old "Sportsman" magazine, but he was not sure, and its size and the lack of text on the other side suggest it is a book plate. It is printed in two of Sir Walter Gi...

As in previous years, I am not sending out "real" cards except to near neighbours who don't use the internet. I have made donations instead to Crisis and to a volunteer organisation providing aid to Ukraine.
Compliments of the season

https://www.fellponymuseum.org.uk/fells/rom_dark/roman1.htm I'll try to post links to a section of the Museum every week or so. This one's about the Roman background in Cumbria (but be warned - the Romans didn't write about Fell ponies).

The Romans moved north to occupy the northern part of Britain circa CE 79 and remained in control until ~CE 420. They kept the borders between northern tribes who were fully under Roman rule (eg, on the western edge, the Brigantes and Carvettii), and the more northerly parts of the island - roughly....
