It’s Mother’s Day coming up- ( it’s a really badly scheduled time for Scottish flower farmers as none of our flowers are quite ready yet) .....but if you fancy giving your mum or mother figure, or mother of your Children something really special to look forward to ......you could give a voucher for one of our ‘pick your own flowers’ sessions, and she could come along and spend a lovely morning (safe and socially distanced of course) with us picking her own flowers and learning about how to pick, condition and work with home grown flowers . It’s a real treat! We will be running these sessions twice weekly as soon as we are allowed throughout our peak flower season - (May- September) and if the lockdown has finally loosened and the word has opened up again, you could combine it with coffee and cake or lunch at the tea garden cafe at Comrie Croft .......If you order tonight I can put PYO vouchers in the post tomorrow and you should have them by Saturday in time for Mother’s Day....send us an email [email protected] for more information and happy Mother’s Day!

It’s that crazy old time of year again .....busy, busy, busy! None of the glamorous jobs- Planning, Building, unravelling, repairing, cleaning, measuring, constructing, fixing, sealing, waterproofing, sewing and sowing, digging, weeding, planting. Still not recovered from winter but summoning the energy for spring! It helps when it’s sunny!

Next up in our sneaky peeks...Judith’s journey to flowers....
From art to environmental conservation, activism, community gardening, food production and finally flower farming...
Always being a crafty type of person, my life took an unexpected twist when I decided to study science instead of going to art college, which I’d always planned to do.
Through these studies I realised how important food production was in looking after our environment, especially for long term resilience and food security. I got into various community gardening projects and environmental charities, using my creativity to organise events and work on campaigns.
( the image of me cycling was from a 2008 protest against Britain’s largest coal fired power station).
I moved to Buckhaven , Fife to work for CLEAR, setting up community gardens and orchards. These were an empowering few years as we packed a town full of fruit trees, turned abandoned areas into wildlife gardens and orchards, grew lots of food and brought local people together to share in it.
I decided I wanted to create a garden that was both a beautiful place to be and still feed a lot of people, while financing itself from the produce. When the opportunity came up at Comrie Croft it was too good to miss ( despite having plans to travel, cycle and learn more about farming before launching into our own growing adventure).
The creative aspect of working with our cut flowers has allowed me to reconnect with my creativity. I really enjoy making large, wild installations, but also the pleasure of planting a garden and watching it grow. I love growing flowers that feed insects which have brought all other sorts of wildlife to our field and also working with more perennials. I enjoy really looking after our soil.

We thought we would introduce ourselves properly, and give a wee insight into our journey to flower farming...up first is me - Cristy.
I’ve always loved flowers and gardening but I never, ever imagined I would become a flower farmer in rural Scotland. I grew up in suburban Australia.
My background is in visual art and this is where I thought my future lay and have spent most of my life. I studied sculpture at art school while immersed in experimental theatre and went on to make performance art. My art practice was not a lucrative one, so to earn a living I worked in the museum sector, and although this work was very interesting, it was not how I wanted to spend my life.
I came to the realisation in my early 30s that I needed a more creative job, that satisfied my need to make things on a daily basis. I had always harboured a fantasy of working as a florist, and so in 2006 retrained and spent 4 years working in a variety of flower shops in Melbourne. Floristry completely took over my life and i worked so hard trying to catch up.
Although many of the places I worked were fantastic, seeking out local and seasonal flowers (even back then), I struggled with the restrictions of conventional floristry ( my art background had not helped me there).
Having to make the prescribed floral products using the same flowers all year round, the waste, the plastic, floral foam and concerns about the chemical residue that I was consistently exposed to.
The more I found out about the environmental impact of the flower industry the less I wanted to be a part of it, but I still wanted to work with flowers.
When I discovered there was such a thing as a flower farmer florist I knew that was what I wanted to be.
All of these plans were disrupted by my children, who started arriving 10 years ago...but this gave me time to dream and plan over those many sleepless nights and long days of early parenting. I was 41 when we started Tomnah’a...the past 6 years for me have been a constant juggling act of raising my children while establishing the farm. It has been extremely hard work but a privilege and a joy to be able to spend my life working with flowers in this way.

I’m a bit behind with ...I think we should have ended last week, but homeschooling and bad weather have interrupted the flow - I think it is the last prompt and a reminder of who we are. ( not the ladies in this photo... but they do bear an uncanny resemblance, and possibly are my long lost relatives!) we are Cristy, Judith and Sam, an exceptional band of local volunteers, seasonal interns who come every year and bring new enthusiasm and experience, handsome eric the pest controller and an extremely supportive team at Comrie Croft where we are based. We started Tomnah’a Market Garden in 2015 with an aim to provide super quality , naturally grown produce for our local community of Comrie and Crieff, and beautiful seasonal cut flowers, particularly for all the weddings at Comrie Croft. We love what we do and enjoy providing nourishment and joy to others, and the creativity of growing. I never dreamed that I would be doing this and count myself very lucky to have been given the opportunity. It’s a lot of hard work, very unglamorous and it’s certainly not always fun ( not in January anyway) but spring is around the corner with sunny days and blue skies and the excitement of all those beautiful flowers on their way....
